Study On Usage of Stone Dust and Steel

This document summarizes a study on using stone dust and steel slag as replacements for fine and coarse aggregates in concrete. Stone dust was used to replace all of the fine aggregate, and steel slag was used to replace coarse aggregate at percentages of 10-50%. The physical and chemical properties of the stone dust, steel slag, and normal aggregates were tested and compared. Concrete mixes with varying replacement levels were made and their compressive strengths were determined and compared to a control mix. The objectives of the study were to reduce costs and environmental impacts by using waste materials in concrete.

STUDY ON USAGE OF STONE

DUST AND STEEL SLAG IN

CONCRETE
SUBMITTED BY :S.SIVAKUMAR
PROJECT GUIDE: KAYALZILI M.E
ABSTRACT
 The present study is to investigate the
influence of replacement of stone dust and
steel slag for fine aggregate and coarse
aggregate on physical and chemical properties
of concrete mixes

 The problem arising from continuous

technological and industrial development is
the disposal of waste material.
 If some of the waste materials are found suitable in
concrete making, it is used to reduce the cost of
construction and also to reduce the disposal of waste
materials.
 The stone dust has been used as fine aggregate and

steel slag has been used as partially replaced

conventional coarse aggregate in concrete.
 In this study, the physical property of stone dust and

steel slag was investigated.

 The different percentages of stone dust and steel slag
contents(100 % of stone dust replacement for sand and
10%,20%,30%,40% and 50% of steel slag replacement
for coarse aggregate) are introduced to the concrete
mixtures.

 The compressive strength was obtained and the

strength of control concrete and concrete with stone
dust and steel slag was compared.
OBJECTIVES
 Most of the volume of concrete is aggregates. Replacing all or
some portion of natural aggregates with steel slag would lead
to considerable environmental benefits.

 To reduce usage of sand in concrete.

 To study the mechanical strength of concrete.

 To reduce the environmental degradation and the cost of

disposal of the waste, thereby utilizing it effectively in
concrete.
NEED FOR REPLACEMENT
 The demand of sand is high

 Transportation cost is high

 Environmental is highly polluted by disposal

of stone dust and steel slag.

 The area occupied by the wastage land is

more.

MIX DESIGN
 Grade Designation :M25
 Type of cement :OPC 43 grade

 Maximum nominal size :20mm

 Water cement ratio : 0.45

 Workability : 100mm

 Exposure condition : Moderate

 Specific gravity of coarse

aggregate : 2.65
 Specific gravity of fine

aggregate : 2.61
 A) Target strength of mix
Fck’ = fck + 1.65S
= 25 + 1.65x5
= 31.6 N/mm².
 B) Selection of water content

Adopt water cement ratio = 0.45

Maximum water content = 186kg
Estimated water cement for
100mm slump = 186 + (6/100) x 186
= 196 kg
 C) Cement content
Water content ratio = 0.45
Cement content = 197/0.45
= 437.37 kg/mᶟ
Volume of coarse aggregate = 0.64
Volume of fine aggregate = 1-0.64
= 0.36
 D) Mix calculation
volume of cement = Mass of cement/
specific gravity of cement x
(1/1000)
= 437.37/3.15x(1/1000)
= 0.138mᶟ
Volume of water = Mass of water/
specific gravity of water x
(1/1000)
= 197/1x(1/1000)
= 0.197mᶟ
Volume of all aggregate = 1-(0.138 + 0.197)
= 0.665mᶟ
Mass of aggregate = 0.665x0.64x2.65x1000
= 1127.84kg/mᶟ
Mass of fine aggregate = 0.665 x 0.34 x 2.61 x 1000
= 590.12kg/mᶟ
Cement = 437.37kg/mᶟ
Water = 197kg/mᶟ
coarse aggregate = 1128kg/mᶟ
Fine aggregate =590kg/mᶟ
