Child & Adolescent Development

This document provides an overview of key concepts in human development. It discusses human development as a lifelong process influenced by biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional factors. Two approaches to development are described: traditional, which views development as occurring mostly in childhood, and life-span, which sees development continuing throughout adulthood. Paul Baltes' life-span perspectives are outlined, including that development is lifelong, multidimensional, plastic, contextual, and involves growth, maintenance and regulation. Principles of child development and learning are then presented, such as the interrelation of developmental domains and the influence of early experiences and relationships on development.

Development
Unit 1: Basic
Concepts and Issues
on Human
Development
Introduction

• In this unit you will be acquainted with

human development as a process, the
developmental tasks that come along
with each developmental stage and
relevant issues that are raised about
human development.
Module 1: Human Development:
Meaning, Concepts and
Approaches
Human Development

The pattern of movement or change that

begins at conception and continues through
the life span.
Development includes growth and decline.
This means that development can be positive
or negative (Santrock, 2002).

Principles of
Human
Development
Some Major Principles of Human Development

1. Development is relatively orderly.

2. While the pattern of development

is likely to be similar, the outcomes
of developmental processes and the
rate of development are likely to
vary among individuals.

3. Development takes place gradually.

While some changes occur in a flash of

insight, more often it takes weeks, months,
or years for a person to undergo changes
that result in the display of developmental
characteristics.
Some Major Principles of Human Development

4. Development as a process is complex

because it is the product of biological,
cognitive & socio-emotional processes
Some Major Principles of Human Development

Biological Processes involve changes

in the individual physical nature.
Some Major Principles of Human Development

Cognitive Processes involve changes in

the individual’s thought, intelligence,
and language.
Some Major Principles of Human Development

Socio-emotional processes include changes

in the individual’s relationships with other
people, changes in emotions, and changes in
personality.
Two approaches to Human Development

1. Traditional – you believe that there were

extensive change from birth to
adolescence, little or no change in
adulthood and decline in old age.
2. Life Span – you believe that even in
adulthood developmental change takes
place as it does during childhood.
Life-Span Perspectives by Paul Baltes

1. Development is lifelong
three, she's probably talking in short but full sentences; she can walk

and run around; and she's probably even potty trained. In only three

years, she's learned how to do all of these things!

Contrast that to an adult or even an adolescent: what have you

learned in the past three years? Probably some interesting things, like

algebra or how to play basketball. But compared to the huge

milestones of the first few years of life, your most recent

accomplishments might seem a little pale in comparison.

This is why psychologists used to believe that people only developed

Development and
Learning that Inform
Practice
Principles of Child Development and Learning that Inform Practice

1. All the domains of development and

learning, physical, social and emotional,
and cognitive are important, and they are
closely related.

2. Many Aspects of children’s learning and

development follow well documented
sequences, with later abilities, skills and
knowledge building on those already acquired.

3. Development and learning proceed at

varying rates from child to child, as well as at
uneven rates across different areas of a child’s
individual functioning.
Principles of Child Development and Learning that Inform Practice

4. Development and learning result from a

dynamic and continuous interaction of
biological maturation and experience.

5. Early experiences have profound effects,

both cumulative and delayed, on a child’s
development and learning; and optimal periods
exist for certain types of development and
learning to occur.

6. Development proceeds toward greater

complexity, self-regulation, and symbolic or
representational capacities.
Principles of Child Development and Learning that Inform Practice

7. Children develop best when they have secure,

consistent relationships with responsive adults
and opportunities for positive relationships with
peers.

8. Development and learning occur in and are

influenced by multiple social and cultural
contexts.

9. Always mentally active in seeking to

understand the world around them, children
learn in a variety of ways; a wide range of
teaching strategies and interactions are
effective in supporting all these kinds of
learning

10. Play is an important vehicle for developing self-

regulation as well as for promoting language,
cognition, and social competence.

11. Development and learning advance when

children are challenged to achieve at a level just
beyond their current mastery, and also when they
have many opportunities to practice newly
acquired skills.

12. Children’s experiences shape their motivation and

approaches to learning, such as persistence, initiative,

and flexibility; in turn, these dispositions and behaviors

affect their learning and development.
