 Ruling BJD government wants to project Orissa as the
state with highest FDI if the POSCO project gets
clearance
 An anti-POSCO movement was led by Abhay Sahoo to
protest against the project
 Another political player in this conflict was the South
Korean government where the president Park Geun-
Hye while on her visit to India in 2014 lent her voice
to the efforts

2. industrialization of the region
 Livelihood of thirty thousand small scale fishermen
will get affected
 Number of people affected is 2.5 lac whereas
employment is just for 48 thousand
 Government is incurring a loss of 1620 crores in the
overall deal taking the time frame in consideration

 The loss of forest lands translates directly to losses in
livelihood , especially of adivasi community
 It adversely affected the livelihood of the people at
the plant, port and mining site
 Formation of protest groups like PKSS(POSCO Kshati
Grasth Sangharsh Samiti) against the project

 Finex is an alternative to traditional Blast Furnace iron
making process, which releases harmful gases in the
environment
 POSCO aimed to reduce air and water pollution by
using industry leading processing system
 There have been developments in low carbon
technology for effective recovery of heat wasted in
different iron and steel making processes

 The plant would require a lot of water supply which
would affect the water consumption of local residents
 Forest and habitat destruction around the mining area
will be massive
 The natural resources are depleted at a faster rate
which in turn disturbs the balance in ecology

 Declared section 144 to restrict public mobility and
gatherings
 On the 12th October 2008 Abhay Sahoo leader of PPSS
was arrested and charged with 25 criminal cases
 Absence of laws on judicious use of natural resources
 PESA Act 1996 and Samata judgement haven’t been
implemented
