Network Management Interface
(Control Module Functions)
• All slots in the GX2-HSG* are universal and intended for the Omnistar GX2 application
modules, except the narrow, right-most slot which is reserved for the control module. All
GX2 application modules can be installed or removed in a powered-on or powered-off
GX2-HSG*.
• The GX2-CM100B Control Module is the network management interface for the GX2-
HSG* and any installed application modules. It provides both a front and rear Ethernet
port for local and network connections.
• Each GX2-HSG* has a unique serial number that can be identified by the network
management system. This enables you to easily identify the location of any control or
application module within the network management system and proves helpful if
troubleshooting is required.
• The primary function of the GX2-CM100B control module is to monitor and control all of
the application modules located in the same chassis and report any alarms to the
network management system.
• Alarms are also reported through a text error message on the optional shelf door unit
(SDU) with optional display, if installed.
• The operator can control application modules through the SDU or network management
system.
• The GX2-CM100B also detects the addition or deletion of modules.
• The GX2-CM100B provides a Quick-Swap Auto-Configure mode. In this mode, the GX2-
CM100B saves all previous settings for the application modules and then automatically
downloads those settings to a replacement module.

Network Management Interface
(Control Module Functions)
External Communications

• The GX2-CM100B enables communication to any application module installed in the

GX2-HSG*. Status information can be viewed and control commands can be sent.
• There are three methods by which the GX2-CM100B can communicate with the other
modules: the SDU, the local Ethernet port and the network Ethernet port.
• the SDU keypad enables the user to navigate a menu system to view or change
module information.
• # The local 10Base-T Ethernet port is a front-panel RJ-45 connector for
communication to a local PC. Through this port, you can monitor and control all
parameters for installed modules using a web-style browser or SNMP interface. This
connector has a reverse pin-out that enables you to connect a computer with a
straight-through cable. No cross over cable is required.
• # The network 10Base-T Ethernet port is a rear-panel RJ-45 jack that you can connect
to a network with a straight-through cable and you can connect any number of GX2
shelves to a PC with an Ethernet hub.

Note: Both Ethernet ports need to be configured and enable an operator to use a web
browser to monitor and control the modules; a green LED is provided at both
connectors to indicate receive activity. Both ports can be used at same time.

Initial Recomendations
• Most application modules and power supplies are designed to
operate in ambient temperatures from -20°C to +65°C. Refer to
Appendix A, “Specifications” in the manual provided with the
application module for specific operating temperatures.
• Ensure that the building and/or rack has sufficient cooling to
accommodate this temperature range.
• Racks should provide a minimum of 5 inches of unobstructed
space at the rear of the chassis to ensure that fan exhausts are
not impeded.
• In addition to cooling, power requirements must to be
considered. Each equipment shelf can dissipate up to 515 W and
can require up to approximately 4.3 A of current at 115 Vac.
• Confirm that each equipment shelf is properly grounded.

RF Section
• The RF input signals are applied to the GX2-HSG* equipment-shelf
rear panel.
• The input test point (RF TP 1) is located directly at the RF input
connector. This enables verification of the input signals with the
highest possible accuracy.
• Low noise, low distortion gain stages amplify the input signal to
the optimum drive level required for the laser when the specified
input level is present.
• Following the final gain stage the laser drive test point (RF TP 2).
This test point provides a reliable indication of modulation levels.
• A sample of the RF level is detected after the final gain stage.
• The output of the RF level detector is a dc voltage level that
corresponds to the total signal power applied to the laser. To
protect the laser, the laser drive signal automatically cuts off when
the RF drive level exceeds a safe limit.
• A calibrated table of RF power meter voltages is stored in NVM and
is used for Network Management System reporting of laser drive
levels.

RF Test-Point Level vs Channel Loading
Compare the RF input signal level to
the specified RF input level noted in
Appendix A from the manual. It may
be necessary to adjust the RF input-
per-channel level to be within the
noted specification.

You can calculate this level based on

the equation: 10 x log10 (ratio of
channels). Avoid varying from the
nominal input as higher levels cause
degraded distortion performance and
lower levels cause degraded C/N
performance.

Note: that the recommended RF levels

are RMS voltage of the CW carriers
used during proofs and the RMS
voltage of the synchronizing pulses
for standard video channels.

Proprietary – For Motorola Internal Use Only OmniStar® GX2

RF Test-Point Level vs Channel Loading
• Apendix A, Specifications:
RF input level: +15 ±0.5 dBmV/ch for 79ch plus 320 MHz of digital
at -6 dBc
RF input test point: -20 ±0.5 dB relative to main RF input port
RF laser drive test point:-20 ±0.5 dBm total power

• Upon receipt of an acceptable RF input signal level, the GX2-LM1000C*

front panel STATUS LED illuminates green.

• With RF input signals applied to the GX2-M1000C*, you can monitor the RF
input level using RF TP1 on the front panel without removing the RF signal
from the rear of the GX2-HSG*.

• If it is necessary to optimize for C/N or distortion, adjust the RF input level

to the module.

Note: Increasing the drive levels, more than 0.5 dB above the specified
drive level, may result in the appearance of clipping artifacts in analog
OmniStar® GX2
video signals.

Block Diagram

Proprietary – For Motorola Internal Use Only OmniStar® GX2

Features
• Each receiver of the GX2-RX200BX2 accepts 1310 nm and 1550 nm
wavelength optical inputs.

• The optical detector of each receiver demodulates its respective

optical input and provides an RF output. Detector current is monitored
by the embedded circuit and is used to determine the received optical
power.

• Signal-path control is provided by the variable attenuator across a 20

dB range, as determined by two operating modes: manual gain control
(MGC) and OFF. You can select the operating mode from the SDU
front panel, local craft port, or Network Management System.

• Directional couplers in the paths of both receivers tap off a –20 dB

signal from the RF outputs for RF TP1 and RF TP2. Individual
connectors mounted on the back panel of the GX2-RX200BX2 provide
an RF output for each receiver path.
Proprietary – For Motorola Internal Use Only OmniStar® GX2
Operation
Operating Modes
• Each receiver in the GX2-RX200BX2 module has two operating modes: manual gain control (MGC),
and off. You can control each receiver independently. To set the operating mode of a GX2-RX200BX2
receiver, use the SDU, local PC port, or Network Management System.

Manual Gain Control

• The manual gain control is used to increment or decrement RF outputs in 0.5 dB steps througha 20
dB range by varying the internal PIN attenuators. The attenuator values are retained in NVM and are
restored after a power down/up or initialization sequence.

Off
• In Off mode, the receiver RF output is minimal to enable removal of the signals from an upstream
receiver, transmitter, or set-top terminal. The off mode is also used to disable the alarms from an
inactive receiver.

Input Optical Power Level Meters

• Each receiver has an internal optical power meter that determines the received optical power by
measuring the optical detector current. Meter readings are accessed through the SDU, local PC port,
or a Network Management System. Readings are reported in optical power (dBm) so you do not
have to perform any conversions.

RF Test Points
• The front panel has two RF test-point connectors, one for each receiver. The top connector is for the
A path and the bottom connector is for the B path. The level at the test point is 20 dB below the

OmniStar® GX2
respective receiver RF output.

RF Output Level
RF Output Level
• The RF output level from the GX2-RX200BX2 depends on the type of
laser that is used, the RF input level to the laser, the GX2-RX200BX2
gain setting, and the optical link loss between the laser and the GX2-
RX200BX2.
