Dehumidification

The document discusses different methods of dehumidification. The most common method is mechanical/refrigerative dehumidification, which uses a refrigerated coil and fan to draw moist air over the coil, causing moisture in the air to condense and drip into a collection bucket. Desiccative dehumidification employs a desiccant material like silica gel to absorb moisture from the air. Other methods include electronic dehumidifiers using heat pumps, air conditioners that remove moisture through a drain, and makeshift methods using reversed window AC units. Dehumidification is used to prevent mold and mildew growth, control humidity for comfort and industrial processes, and reduce ice making loads in arenas.

Uses
 Humid air can lead to mold and mildew
 Humid air is preferred by many insects
 Moths, fleas, cockroaches, etc
 Ice Arenas
 More comfortable environment
 Reduce load on ice making equipment

Mechanical/Refrigerative
Dehumidification
 Most Common
 Draws moist air over refrigerated coil using a small fan
 Saturation Vapor Pressure decreases with the decreasing
temperature
 Moisture in air condenses and drips into collection bucket
 Air is then reheated by warmer part of refrigeration coil
 Most effective in high ambient and RH>45%

stream and allow it to absorb moisture

 Then expose to low humidity (reactivation)

moisture or have it exit the system

 Electronic
 Use a heat pump to create a
cool surface for condensation
