Usage
 USE 1 An action that started and finished in the past

 USE 2 A series of actions that happened one after the other

 USE 3 A longer action that started and finished in the past

 USE 4 Habit in the Past


Usage - examples
 USE 1
We had lunch together yesterday.
 USE 2
When he got back home he put off his shoes and turned on the TV.
 USE 3
She combed her hair for hours.
 USE 4
I played the piano when I was a child.

NOTE! We can use the past simple with the past continuous. Look at
the example below. Can you explain the choice of tenses?
She was washing the dishes when the phone rang.
Past Simple Affirmative
(regular verbs)

 I worked  We worked
 You worked  You worked
 He/She/It worked  They worked

The past simple ends in – ed for regular verbs.


Spelling of Regular Affirmative Past
Tense Forms
Most regular verbs: add – ed work » worked
help » helped
start » started
Verbs ending in – e: add – d hope » hoped
decide » decided

Verbs ending in one stressed shop » shopped


vowel + one consonant plan » planned
(except w or y): double the refer » referred
consonant and add - ed
Verbs ending in consonant + - hurry » hurried
y: change y to i and add – ed cry » cried
Past Simple Affirmative
(irregular verbs)

 I ate  We ate
 You ate  You ate
 He/She/It ate  They ate

The past simple does not end in –ed for


irregular verbs.
The verb “to be”

 I was  You were

 He/She/It was  They were


Past Simple Negatives
Subject + Auxiliary verb + Verb
I didn’t go

 I/He/She/It didn’t go to London.

 I/He/She/It wasn’t afraid.

 We/You/They didn’t believe me.

 We/You/They weren’t at home.
