Embedded System in Automobile Vehicles

Electronic control units (ECUs) play a major role in modern automobiles by replacing traditional mechanical systems with electronic control systems. ECUs are embedded systems that consist of a microcontroller, sensors, and other components to monitor and control various automobile functions in real-time. Modern vehicles contain up to 100 ECUs to control subsystems like engine management, braking, safety, infotainment, and more. This complex network of ECUs requires millions of lines of code, making the modern car like 30 or more computers working together. ECUs read sensor data, execute control algorithms, and ensure the safe and efficient operation of todays computerized vehicles.

A PRESENTATION ON

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS IN AUTOMOBILE

BY : SAM CLASTINE .J

WHY EMBEDDED SYSTEM IN CAR ?

• Recently Drive-by-wire (DBW)technology appear on

Automotive industry.

• Replaces the traditional mechanical systems with

electronic systems.

• Electronic Control Unit (ECU) plays a major role in this

system.
What is an Embedded System?

• Embedded systems are a combination of hardware

and software where software is usually known as
firmware that is embedded into the hardware.

• Examples – cars, phones, mp3 players, medical

equipment, etc.
IN THE BEGINNING
• D-Jetronic system
developed by Bosch
• Volkswagen Type 3 –
1967 The system senses
inlet manifold pressure,
and engine temp. Turned
injectors on and off
First Electronic Control Unit

• First seen in 1975

Chevrolet Cosworth Vega
• Received information
from 10 sensors.
• Pre-programmed to
monitor engine and
deliver fuel to cylinders.
• Still analog but no digital.
FIRST MICROPROCESSOR
• 1976 Aston
Martin Lagonda
is first to use the
computer
management and
LED display.
• Cost three times
the budget of the
car.
ECU COMPONENTS
Electronic Control Unit(ECU)consists of:
• Microcontroller(s)or 8-32bit 40 MHz microprocessor
• Analog-digital converter
• High-level digital outputs
• Digital-analog converter
• Sensors
• Voltage regulator(s) ,etc.
OTHER MODULES
• Antilock Brakes
• Airbags
• Security systems • Brake assist
• Keyless entry • Stability control
• Media center • Anti-collision
• Reverse assist
• Cruise control • Traction control
• Seat position and • Self-parking
temperature
PRE-CRASH SAFETY SYSTEM (PCS)

• When an obstacle is
detected with stereo
camera and wave radar
• The system retracts the
seatbelts, warns the
driver, and applies the
brake.
• Driver's condition (eg.
Face direction) is
monitored.
AIRBAG

• Monitors various sensors

including accelerometers
and detects a collision.
• If a collision is detected,
the ignition of a gas
generator propellant is
triggered to inflate a bag.
Real-Time Constraint:
• The trigger must be within
10-20msec. after the
collision.
Instrument Cluster
• Displays data about
the vehicle in its
current state
• Various modules send
data to ECU
• ECU send a packet of
info
• Cluster module looks
for specific headers
• Cluster is updated
MODERN VEHICLES

• One modern car is packed with up to

100 million lines of computer code,
more than the F-22 Raptor Jet fighter.
• More luxurious cars can contain up to
100 Electronic Control Unit (ECU).

LEXUS LS-460

• Released in Sep., 2006.

• More than 100 ECUs when all optional
equipment are installed.
• About 7,000,000 lines of code.
Google’s Driverless car
• To be released soon , Realistically in 2020.

• It has new prototype sensors and chips

that are less expensive to manufacture,
cameras that improve visibility .

• Google’s car is also known as “WAYMO”.

• Waymo manufactures has a suite of self-

driving hardware developed by them.
These sensors and hardware enhanced
vision system, improved radar, and laser-
based lidar.
“It would be easy to say the modern car is a computer
on wheels, but it’s more like 30 or more computers on
wheels.”
Bruce Emaus,
The chairman of SAE International embedded
software standards committee.
