Scumbling
Smudging
Stippling - is the
creation of a pattern
simulating varying
degrees of solidity or
shading by using small
dots.
Types of Shading
Scumbling - modify (a drawing)
with light shading in pencil or
charcoal to give a softer effect.
Direction is important in
shading. The rough change of
direction shows the difference
on the edge between the
horizontal and vertical shading
direction. Control the direction
of your shading.
Types of Shading
Smudging – applying
varying pressure on the
pencil to create light and
dark tones.
The precise control can
allow you to model
smooth forms.
This type of technique is
useful for creating
highlights across textures
like hair or grass.
Types of Shading
Hatching / Cross
Hatching - Hatching is
an artistic technique
used to create tonal or
shading effects by
drawing closely spaced
parallel lines. When
lines are placed at an
angle to one another, it
is called cross-
hatching.
Stippling - is the creation of a pattern simulating varying
degrees of solidity or shading by using small dots.
The smaller the number of the pencil, the lighter shade that
you can make.
