Dehumidifier

This document describes a student team's project to design and fabricate a solar-assisted air dehumidifier. It includes: 1) The team members working on the project. 2) An overview of the proposed dehumidifier system, which uses a solar water heater, liquid desiccant, fans, and other components. 3) A description of the process using a pressure-concentration chart and comparisons to conventional dehumidifiers.

Desiccants
There are two types of desiccants available.
Solid desiccants
Sillicas
Zeolites
polymers
Liquid desiccants
LiCl
LiBr
CaCl2
Why liquid desiccant…
•The regeneration temperature required for liquid desiccants are lower
than for that of solid desiccants.
•The pressure drop through a liquid desiccant system is smaller than the
pressure drop through a solid desiccant wheel.
•liquid desiccants can be used as a heat transfer medium in heat
exchanger which enables pre-cooling or preheating.
•During the dehumidification process scrubbing of air stream takes place
which provides a cleansing action an it inhibits microbial growth.
•Energy is stored in liquid desiccant as chemical energy rather than
thermal energy.
Parabolic trough collectors (PTC)
Specification of PTC
•Width aperture of PTC = 0.50 m
•Length of parabola = 59.8 m
•Parabola focal distance = 0.112 m
•Radius of the parabola = 0.25 m
•Theoretical diameter of the receptor= 0.0023
•PTC length =0.95
•PTC width = 0.58

Selection for Mode Of Mass Transfer
•There are several methods are available for effective heat and mass transfer namely
sprayed coil arrangement, spray chambers and packed bed towers.

•Out of which, packed bed towers are more effective since they provide large rate of
heat and mass transfer per unit volume. Hence a compact design is possible.
•Packed tower operated in a counter flow arrangement is used in which the cool strong
desiccant is sprayed from the top and distributed into the tower which then trickles
down through the tower in a thin film covering the packing surface.
Selection of Heat Exchangers

exchanger liquid to gas heat transfer
Effect of different parameters on humidity
reduction
•Increased inlet air temperature helps the desiccant solution to easily
trap the moisture from humid fresh air and thus increases the
effectiveness.
•When mass air flow rate decreases, keeping desiccant flow rate
constant then, humidification of air stream increases.
•The moisture removal rate increased with the increase of the
desiccant flow rate.
•The moisture removal rate increases with the decrease of the
temperature of the fluids
