includes digital technologies such as calculators, spreadsheets, dynamic geometry software, and computer algebra and graphing software. It refers to technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications. What is ICT?
ICT improves the way mathematics should be taught and
enhances student understanding of basic concepts. Six Major Barriers 1. Lack of time in the school schedule for projects involving ICT. 2. Insufficient teacher training opportunities for ICT projects 3. Inadequate technical support for these projects 4. Lack of knowledge about ways to integrate ICT to enhance the curriculum 5. Difficulty in integrating and using different ICT tools in a single lesson 6. Unavailability of resources at home for the students to access the necessary educational materials General benefits for education 1. Receiving instant feedback from computer programs when trying out ideas, encourages pupils to use conjecture and to keep exploring (Clements, 2000) 2. Using the technology to carry out the manual labour of computations or drawing, frees the student to focus on strategies, and encourages a process of trial and error (Jarrett, 1998; Ruthven and Hennessy, 2002) 3. ICT-based tasks provide a focus for extended collaboration between pupils (Hudson, 1997) 4. The interactive nature of multimedia software motivates pupils and leads to improved performance (Moseley et al., 1999) 5. ICT-based tools provide pupils with an advanced communication capability, allowing them to use graphics, images and text together, to demonstrate their understanding of mathematical concepts (Jarrett, 1998) Benefits of using ICT in Mathematics. Becta (2003) summarised the key benefits:
1. ICT promotes greater collaboration among students and encourages
communication and the sharing of knowledge. 2. ICT gives rapid and accurate feedbacks to students and this contributes towards positive motivation. 3. It also allows them to focus on strategies and interpretations of answers rather than spend time on tedious computational calculations. 4. ICT also supports constructivist pedagogy, wherein students use technology to explore and reach an understanding of mathematical concepts. Conclusion
This approach (ICT) promotes higher order thinking and
better problem solving strategies; students would then use technology to concentrate on problem-solving processes rather than on calculations related to the problems Thank You!
