Occupational Health and Safety of the Supporting Staff
of North South University
Introduction:
Occupational health and safety is a discipline with a broad
scope involving many specialized fields.
In this field
 the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of
physical, mental and social well-being of NSU supporting
staff.
 the prevention among NSU supporting staff of adverse effects
on health caused by their working conditions.
 the protection of NSU supporting staff in their employment
from risks resulting from factors adverse to health.
 the placing and maintenance of workers in an occupational
environment adapted to physical and mental needs.
Work- related hazards
 Physical
 Mental
 Chemical
 Biological
 Radiological
 Ergonomic
16 hours of duty, everyday
with having only 2 days of
paid vacation in a month.
Does any of this sound
normal?
Every business has safety risks and NSU is no different. Rather,
it suffers greatly in one aspect, which is security.
They are faced with increase work place stress which can lead
to illnesses or depression. The potential stress may limit their
ability to perform during emergency situations.
The security department consists of around 200 people who
are responsible for safety and security of the university. But
they struggle to stay alert, and feel left behind due to long
working hours with minimal payment.
Exposure to workplace hazards:
 Sitting in a proper posture is an undiscovered territory for
them yet it is essential to keep posture correct as they are
sitting on work. Without a straight back and shoulder in line
they are prone to spinal disorders.
 For employees in the parking lot-inhaling carcinogenic
exhaust fumes, and spending long hours in an enclosed dim
space daily may lead to many problems, such as depression,
lung disease, acute poisoning and muscular disorders.
 Supporting staff working in sanitation department have the
risk of penetrating injury from syring and other sharp
instuments and contaminated with chemicals and medical
wastage from medical and labrotory department which may
spread the infectious diseases.
Solutions:

 Appropriate support systems such as workplace screening,

and ergonomics should be provided. Workers' health has to
be protected by controlling hazards in the workplace.
 Monitoring the work environment and workers' health with a
view to early identification of health risks and evaluation of
the effectiveness of health protection and promotion
programs.
 There should be an appropriate discussion about the work
and the culture of the department on regular intervals, so
that the management can develop and promote a healthy
and safe work environment for its employees.
Solution contd…
 Reducing the working hours to the national limit by hiring
more members if needed.
 Motivate workers by providing rewards as an appreciation
towards their work
 Employees working in sanitation need to be trained on sound
practices that prevent spread of diseases.
 Proper gear and equipment need to be supplied and regularly
maintained.
Recommendation
 Employee rights need to be protected, evaluated and
explained for the employees.
 Trained all staffs for any kind of emergencies.
 Have clear understanding of hazards on workplace among
employee.
 Organization should understand the limit of employees
ability.
 Establish a schedule & conduct the monthly health & safety
inspection of the faculties.
Recommendatio contd…..
 Give space to the employee to share their work-related
problem and concern.
 Provide equal chance to review the health & safety inspection
report and recommended preventive measure and discuss
outstanding issues with employee
 Record and report properly.
Conclusion
 Workplace accidents and errors can cause large amount of
loss to the organizations each year , and the injured workers
and their families endure considerable financial and
emotional suffering. So we should give special attention on
this.
 Our university also should focus on the aspect of public
health “ prevention is better than cure”. Minimize the every
aspect of hazard that can occur here and give the employee
secure environment. So that you can get better output from
them.
