Sampling Distribution of Sample Means

The document discusses sampling distributions of sample means. It provides an example where samples of 3 cards are drawn from a population of 8 numbered cards. There are 56 possible samples that are listed along with their means. The sampling distribution of the sample means is constructed and displayed as a frequency distribution and probability distribution. Finally, the sampling distribution is visualized with a histogram.

SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION OF
SAMPLE MEANS
Activity

 Samples of 3 cards are drawn at random

from a population of eight cards
numbered from 1-8.

 List all possible samples and corresponding

mean.
 Construct the sampling distribution of the
sample means.
 Draw a histogram of the sampling distribution
of sample means.
Solution

 (Using a combination of n
distinct objects taken r at a
time, we conclude that
there are 56 possible
samples) 8C3 = 56
 Combinations without repetition (n=8, r=3)
 Using Items: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8
 List has 56 entries.

Parameter

 Is a descriptive measure that describes a

population

 E.g. All KCC Senior High School students.

Statistic

 Is a descriptive measure that describes a

population.

 E.g. A selected group of KCC Senior High School

students.
Sampling Distribution of
Sample Means
 Is a frequency distribution
using the means computed
from all possible random
samples of a specific size taken
from a population.
Sampling Distribution of
Sample Means
Means vary from
sample to sample. We
expect different values
for the samples.
Sample Mean

 Sample mean is a random

variable that depends on a
particular sample. It has a
probability distribution. The
probability distribution is also
the sampling distribution of
the sample means.
Sampling Error

 The difference between the

sample mean and the
population mean is called
sampling error.
Problem

 A group of students got the ff. scores in a test

(6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21) Consider the sample size
of 3 that can be drawn from this population.

 List all possible samples and corresponding

mean.
 Construct the sampling distribution of the
sample means.
 Draw a histogram of the sampling distribution
of sample means.
Problem 2

 A population consist of the five numbers 2, 3,

6, 8 and 11. Consider sample size of 2 that can
be drawn from the population.

 List all possible samples and corresponding

mean.
 Construct the sampling distribution of the
sample means.
 Draw a histogram of the sampling distribution
of sample means.
