Leguminous Cover Crops: Their Benefits, Establishment (Planting) and Maintenance

This document discusses leguminous cover crops that can be planted in oil palm plantations to provide temporary soil cover and benefits. It describes several species of legumes used as cover crops, including Mucuna bracteata, Pueraria phaseoloides, Calopogonium mucunoides, and Calopogonium caeruleum. The document outlines how to establish these cover crops by planting mixtures of seeds, inoculating them with rhizobium, and applying rock phosphate. It also provides details on separately establishing Mucuna bracteata from seed in polybags before transplanting. Maintaining the cover crops involves weeding, manuring with NPK and rock phosphate, and addressing any unsuccessful trans

 Cover crops are planted for soil conservation in growing plant such
as grasses, legumes, shrubs or other herbaceous plants that provide
temporary cover in oil palm plantation. It temporarily protects the
soil when crop residues are not adequate.
Leguminous Cover
Crop Species :
Mucuna bracteata
Origin : North Eastern areas of India.

Habitat : Warm and humid ecosystem.

20 – 35 degrees Celsius.
Consistently annual rainfall.

Growth : 10 -15 cm / day

Rate
Pueraria phaseoloides

Origin : East / Southeast Asia

Habitat : Wet evergreen / monsoon forests

Growth : 30 cm / day , steams can reach 20 m

Rate
Calopogonium mucunoides

Origin : Tropical America

Habitat : Wet tropics with annual rainfall, best

at
32 degrees Celsius.
Calopogonium caeruleum

Origin : Tropical America from Mexico

Habitat : Best on well-drained soils,

humidtropics
with annual rainfall
Forms a thick pure
cover under oil palm

Reduce the soil

of pest and diseases fixation
Reduce water loss
from the soil
ESTABLISHMENT ( planting )

*PP = Pueraria phaseoloides,
*CM = Calopogonium mucunoides
*CC = Calopogonium caeruleum
*MB = Mucuna bracteata
 these cover crop are then will be mixed with 50g rhizobium + 250ml
of water
 later the mixture will be spread onto thin layer and left dried under
shade
 after that, will be mixed with rock phosphate
Preparation for Mucuna bracteata

- To remove MB from climbing the oil palm.

Manuring

- NPK Yellow (45kg/hA) [1st month]

- Rock Phospate (100kg/hA) [ 2nd month]
