Basics of Photography: Subodh Khanolkar

This document provides an overview of basic photography concepts including: - Camera parameters such as aperture, shutter speed, exposure, and ISO which can be controlled to adjust the amount of light in an image. - Physics of photography including how a lens is used to focus light and form an image, and how depth of field is impacted by aperture size. - Other topics covered are white balance, which removes color casts from ambient lighting, and exposure which measures the amount of light in an image. - The document concludes with a brief question and answer section.

WHAT WILL WE TALK

ABOUT?
WHAT IS THE
MEANING OF THE
WORD "CAMERA"?
The word
means vault or
room, in
essence a
"camera
obscura" type
room.
DERIVED FROM THE
LATIN WORD KAMARA
CAMERA PARAMETERS
WHAT IS THE
MEANING OF THE
WORD
Photography
finds it origins
in the Greek
words – Phos &
Graphein,
meaning to
write (paint)
with light.

PHOS + GRÁPHEIN
A candle (or a bright
object) can be
projected on a screen
through a lens. The
lens needs to be
moved between the
screen and the candle,
along the line
connecting them till
we see a sharp image.

PHYSICS OF
PHOTOGRAPHY
The lens in the experiment above needs to be moved relative
to the screen (or camera) in order to get a sharp image. The
process of moving the lens is focusing. Worth noting, when the
object is at infinity, lens can be very close to the screen& as
the object comes closer to the lens, the distance between the
lens & screen increases.
PHYSICS OF
PHOTOGRAPHY
• Size or diameter of the lens (Aperture)

• Sensitivity of the medium (ISO)

• Duration of exposure (Shutter speed)

DIAMETER
While a big lens means
more light entering the
camera, it also means
more stray light enters,
there-by making a large
part of the photo
blurred. The total depth
of the photographed
area that can be sharp
at a time is called the
depth of field.

DEPTH OF FIELD
DEPTH OF FIELD
The aperture is created by an adjustable iris that
can be opened or closed to control how much
light enters the camera. This iris is made of a
series of thin metal blades that move together to
create a roughly circular opening of variable size.
In most DSLR cameras, the iris is built into the
lens itself. It is the opening in this iris that is
actually the aperture. When adjusting the size of
the aperture, we describe “opening” the aperture
up and “stopping” it down. That simply refers to
making the hole wider or narrower. A
photographer may say they are “shooting wide”,
meaning they have opened the aperture a lot, or
they may say they are “stopped way down”,
meaning the aperture has been closed a lot.

APERTURE
The shutter controls
the amount of time for
which light can pass
into the medium or
sensor.

Expressed as 1/2000,
1/1000, 1/250, ......,
1/16,..... 1, 2, 3,.....
seconds.

SHUTTER
Simply put, ISO
is a measure of
the sensitivity of
the medium
(film/sensor).
Higher ISO
implies the
medium will be
more sensitive to
light and hence
will capture more
"noise".
ISO
Exposure is a crude measure of
the amount of light in an image.
It is denoted by EV (exposure
value). EV 0 is defined as an
image exposed for 1 second
(shutter speed) at f1 (aperture).
EV per step upwards (+ve side)
indicates amount of light is
doubled and EV per step
downwards indicates light is
halved.

A QUIZ
WHAT IS THE COLOUR OF THIS
DRESS
A QUIZ
WHAT IS THE COLOUR NOW?
Ambient light has a lot of effects
on an image being captured.
White balance (WB) is the process
of removing unrealistic color
casts, so that objects which
appear white in person are
rendered white in your photo.
Proper camera white balance has
to take into account the "color
temperature" of a light source,
which refers to the relative
warmth or coolness of white light.
