Lesson 2 Mapeh 9: Environmental Issues

This document discusses various environmental issues including improper waste disposal, pollution, illegal mining, cyanide fishing, pesticide drift, deforestation, oil spills, coral reef degradation, and climate change. It describes how each of these issues negatively impacts the environment and human health. Potential solutions are provided for some of the issues such as proper waste management, enforcement of environmental laws, reforestation, and reducing carbon emissions.

Lesson 2

MAPEH 9

Environmental Issues
“ How do environmental
problems affect human health
and community health.
Environmental issues
threaten our quality of
life.
•Deforestation •Loss of coral reefs
•Soil erosion • Mismanagement
•Loss of agricultural
and abuse of
lands
•Air and water coastal resources
pollution •Over-fishing
•Improper disposal of
solid and toxic waste
Environmental issues:

–Improper waste disposal

–Pollution
–Illegal mining
–Cyanide fishing
Environmental issues:
–Pesticide drift
–Deforestation
–Oil spill
–Coral reef degradation
–Climate change
Improper waste
disposal:
-This issue seriously
threatens nature by
contaminating soil, air
and water that brings
risk to animal and
marine life.
Activities may reduce the
effect of improper disposal
• Proper segregation,
• Recycling and composting and,
• Avoiding burning garbage
Pollution:
-Is an adverse effect in the
environment brought about by
pollutants
Pollutants:
 Harmful substance
 Compound
 Energy
Environmental contamination causes
toxic effects endangering human
health, living resources, and ecosystem.
Types of pollution:
Air Water
Noise Land
Solution to improve the alarming
level of pollution:
 Strict implementation of
environmental laws
 Information drive and,
 Positive attitude towards a clean and
healthy environment
Illegal Mining
- Toxic wastes from illegal
mining or mining accidents
are poisonous to land and
water. Illegal mining
activities lead to
deforestation and loss of
biodiversity in land and
aquatic life.
Possible solution:
-The government should be
strict implementing the laws of
the land regarding mining.
Cyanide Fishing
- Cyanide fishing
uses cyanogen
compound or most
commonly know as
sodium cyanide, in
coral reef to stun and
catch fishes.
Pesticide drift
- This is the movement of
chemical pesticides from
the intended place to
another, caused by wind
and other factors. this
causes accidental exposure
of human, animals or
plants to pesticides.
Causes of pesticide drift:

 Regulations not strictly

implemented and,
Inadequate farmer’s knowledge of
safety procedure
Solution to avoid health
risks:
 Review the lists of approved
pesticides and,
 Improved the pesticide
policies implementation
Deforestation
- Clearing forests on a
massive scale results to
degradation of the quality of
the land. Deforestation is the
results of widespread illegal
logging, agricultural
expansion, and land
conversion to residential and
commercial purposes
Deforestation may
lead to:
 Soil degradation Near extinction of
 Decreased natural rare animal and
resources plant species
 Reduced clean air Climate change
and water supply Landslides
Reforestation

Planting trees to replace the

lost ones is every one’s
responsibility.
Oil spill
- Is a form of
pollution where oil
or liquid petrol is
released to the
environment, soil, or
body of water
Coral Reef Degradation
- Coral reef are home of various marine life
forms. These reefs can only live in very clear
water. However, human activities directly and
indirectly contribute to degradation of coral
reefs.
Indirect Direct
damaging: damaging:
 Pollution by  Dynamite fishing
nutrients that leads  Cyanide use
to algal growth  Uninformed
 Overfishing divers catching
 Global warming marine life
Climate Change
- Change in global climate cause a variety
of risks to health. Climate change is brought
about human activities, particularly fossil
fuel burning. The greenhouse gases
emissions from these activities, particularly
carbon dioxide trap heat in the lower
atmosphere.
Climate change brought different
extreme weather condition:
 Heavy rains
 Floods
 Extreme heat
 Very strong typhoons
Example efforts that reduce carbon
foot prints:
 Biking
 Walking
 Using environmental friendly
electrical devices
