Etymology: The Origin of Words

Etymology is the study of the history and origin of words and the changes in their form and meaning over time. It looks at how words have been incorporated from different cultures and how their meanings have evolved. Examples given are the word "obsolete" coming from Latin meaning "to grow old, become disused" and "beauty" coming from Anglo-French and Latin meaning "pretty" or "good". The word "English" itself comes from Old English meaning "of or relating to England or its people". Etymology traces words back to their roots in other languages to understand their original and changing definitions.
