LESSON 1: What is
contemporary arts?
CONTEMPORARY ARTS- is the art that
springs out of the present-day events
and passions of the society.
-It is the newest forms of art, amusing
people from the middle to the late
20th century up to this very minutes.
-It is produced by the 21st century
artists living in the postmodern age. -
It is essential to you not only
because it belongs to your time, but
it also serves as form of expression
of the people’s present feelings
-Through contemporary arts, artists
can express and communicate
their sentiments.
-More social issues have been
realized in the recent decades.
What is Modern Art?
MODERN ARTS- is referred to as
“traditional” compared to
contemporary arts.
-Emerged in the late 1800s and
continued to grow for more or less a
century (1800-mid 20th century)
-It slowly waned in the middle to late
20th century when postmodernism
came to light.
-Developed as styles and
techniques, whereas
contemporary means “with the
times”
-Postmodernism then gave birth to
what we know now contemporary
art.
What is the difference
between Contemporary
and Modern Art
- Contemporary arts is culturally
diverse and technology oriented
while modern art is traditional and
conservative
-Contemporary arts produced in the
21st century while modern art starts
in late 1800s up to mid-20th century.
-Contemporary arts is more
socially conscious than modern
art.
- Contemporary art different from
modern art and other arts periods
is its never ending originality.
CONTEMPORARY ART
FORMS
INTEGRATIVE ART- combined arts or
crossbreeding that resulted in a
hybrid art.
Example:
1. the integration of science and
humanities (two different
disciplines) in building
architecture.
2. The presentation of three great
Filipino Artist (Lisa Macuja-Elizalde,
prima ballerina; Cecil Licad,
international classical pianist; and
Lea Salonga, international singer
and musical actress) coming from
three distinct discipline
(dance, music and song) performing
under one roof at the Cultural Center
of the Philippines.
- They combined their talents to
produce a rare performance. The
program was called the Legends and
the Classic.
The arts are classified in distinct forms:
architecture, visual arts, music, literary arts,
dance, dramatic arts, cinema and broadcast
arts and new media.
However, the arts in the regions have evolved
and have taken a new form. The arts in the
region have combined to create integrative
art.
Contemporary art forms in the
regions now include the following:
choreography, musical instruments,
literary and music composition,
visual design, theatrical
performance and cinema
1. CHOREOGRAPHY- is an
arrangement or design for
dance movement usually
accompanied by music.
- It is a art of dancing that is
composed of a series of dance
steps and movement to create
story.
Contemporary choreography are
mostly seen in the production of
street dancing or regional festivals.

the ballet Philippines.
2. MUSICAL INSTRUMENT- is any tool or
device that produce sound.
-It consist of an array of shapes and
styles from the simple to the complex.
-Examples of traditional musical
instruments in the Philippines are the
kulintang, gangsa, and the kudyapi.
Integrationof arts is seen through
the intricate designs of musical
instrument, representing visual
arts; and their function is to create
music.

3. LITERARY AND MUSICAL
COMPOSITION- are written works
meant to read, sung or delivered in a
play.
-They can be written in prose or in
poetry form.
-Musical compositions are not written
but notated (musical symbols).
Literary
pieces such as “Bata, Bata,
Pa’no ka Ginawa” and” Dekada
‘70” novels by Lualhati Bautista
that were turned into films by Chito
Roño; and Mars Ravelo’s comics
“Darna”, “Captain Barbel” and
“Dyesebel”
4. VISUAL DESIGN- is a composition
or layout of lines, shapes and color
to form patterns on paper, textile or
any piece for that matter.
-It can be two dimensional works like
painting and drawing.
-It can be three dimensional works
like installation and sculpture.

5. THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE- the
staging and execution of a production
like drama, opera, festivals and the like
-It pertains to a public presentation of
dramatic or musical entertainment.
-It involves a lot of teamwork that
includes the director, casts, and the
crew workers.
Technology, whether traditional or
digital, multi-media, innovative or
alternative is a vital part of any
performance.
CONTEMPORARY THEATRICAL
PERFORMANCE- is experimental,
innovative, controversial and
interdisciplinary, going beyond
theater and other art forms, like
puppetry, cinema and sculpture.
-Example: PETA ‘s Rak of AEGIES- a
musical tribute to the Filipino 90s
band, Aegis.
6. CINEMA- is the most popular of the art
forms; yet it is the youngest of all.
-It appeared only in the early 1900s in
Manila and later spread in the regions.
-The characteristics of the cinema is
similar to the theater, except that it is not
a live performance and the action is seen
on the flat screen.
-Example: Comedy-musical, “I Do
Bidoo: Heto na Po Sila”, a movie
tribute to the prized trio of the
80s, the Apo Hiking Society.
-In the regions, art forms are now
collaborative and community based,
fostering values of camaraderie,
cooperation, team-building and pride of
place.

“The Philippine is a gold mine of art”
-Philippines has variety of many other
arts forms.
4 COLONIAL PERIODS
-Spanish
-British
-American
-Japanese
the art of the Philippines had been
influenced by almost all spheres of
the globe.
POSTMODERNISM- give birth to
contemporary art in the late 1900s
- Its first appearance happened after
the second world war and again
during the martial law era in the
1970s.
MARTIAL LAW ERA- writers broke the
laws by writing screams of protest
against the government and
filmmakers used their expertise in
joining the bandwagon of
nationalistic artists.

They believed that the artists should
no longer try to create something
“new”
They needed to do was to “borrow,
combine, explore”
Thisgive birth to the integrative art
which is being practiced in the
regions at present.

FEATURES
1. PASTICHE-common feature of
postmodernism, which refers to the
blurring of division between fine art
and commercial art, high culture and
low culture and highbrow and
lowbrow.
-It also means artistic, musical and
literary works that come from diverse
sources – a mixture, a medley of
different ideas
- There is also an interweaving web of
stories which creates paradoxes.
- Pastiche celebrates the artwork from
which it derives inspiration and does
not mock it.

2. BROCOLAGE-or assemblage, feature of
postmodernism, popularly used in visual
arts.
-It refers to creation or construction that
uses a diverse range of materials – from
mass-produced to recovered objects.
-A simplification of collage, bricolage
can also pertain to the use of words
as the central artistic element.

3. APPROPRIATION- or borrowing is
another feature.
- This refers to the use of the style
and content of another culture for a
performance, for example, the music
of Bach being played by a Filipino
rock band.

4. INSTALLATION- it is an art made indoors
or outdoors where a particular space is
transformed into a three-dimensional
artwork.
-It is made of diverse materials, using a
realistic or abstract style.
It is a conceptual art that present
diverse theme, but it is usually
temporary.

-New themes in all the art forms
consist of certain socially conscious
issues which have arisen with this
period: feminism, consumerism,
multiculturalism, globalization, health
awareness, migration and so on.
-A perfect example of this is

-Filipino contemporary artists still
deal with current concerns that affect
our country
-They provide ways to allow the
audience to participate in the
experience
-It is a conceptual art that present
diverse theme, but it is usually
temporary.
