Lesson 1.1.

Introduction to Conic Sections and Circles

Time Frame: 4 one-hour sessions
At the end of the lesson, the student is able to:
(1) illustrate the different types of conic sections: parabola,
ellipse, circle, hyperbola, and degenerate cases;
(2) define a circle;
(3) determine the standard form of equation of a circle;
(4) Graphing circles
(5) Solving situational problems involving circles
Conic Sections
Four conic sections:
A plane intersecting a double cone will generate:
• Circles
• Parabolas
• Ellipses
• Hyperbolas

Parabola Circle Ellipse Hyperbola

A double napped cone-
Is the image of two cones which are placed “nose to
nose” with one cone balanced perfectly on the other.

Conic sections -
Are described as the curves which can be derived from
taking slices of a “double-napped” cone. It can be
described as the intersection of a plane and a double-
napped cone.
A circle is
formed when
the plane
intersects one
cone and is
perpendicular
to the axis.
An Ellipse is formed
when the plane
intersects one cone
and the plane is not
perpendicular to
the axis.
A Hyperbola is
formed when
the plane
intersects
both planes.
A parabola is the set
of all points in the
plane that are
equidistant from a
fixed line (directrix)
and a fixed point
(focus) not on the
line.
REMEMBER
Standard Form of the Equation of a Circle
A circle with center at the origin and radius r has the
equation
x 2 + y 2 = r2
A circle with center (h,k) and radius r has the equation
(x-h) 2 + (y-k) 2 = r2
Directions: Find the product and identify the word behind the
answers.

THE GENERAL EQUATION OF A CIRCLE

The general equation of a circle is

x2+y2+Dx+Ey+F=0,
where D,E, and F are real numbers.
