Conic sections -
Are described as the curves which can be derived from
taking slices of a “double-napped” cone. It can be
described as the intersection of a plane and a double-
napped cone.
A circle is
formed when
the plane
intersects one
cone and is
perpendicular
to the axis.
An Ellipse is formed
when the plane
intersects one cone
and the plane is not
perpendicular to
the axis.
A Hyperbola is
formed when
the plane
intersects
both planes.
A parabola is the set
of all points in the
plane that are
equidistant from a
fixed line (directrix)
and a fixed point
(focus) not on the
line.
REMEMBER
Standard Form of the Equation of a Circle
A circle with center at the origin and radius r has the
equation
x 2 + y 2 = r2
A circle with center (h,k) and radius r has the equation
(x-h) 2 + (y-k) 2 = r2

answers.
