and most basic element of design defined
by a point moving in a space.
Elements of Design
Shape – A two or more dimensional area that
stands out from the space next to or around
it due to a defined or implied boundary.
Recognizable objects or form. Shapes can be
identified as geometric or organic.
Elements of Design
Texture – Refers to visual or physical
quality of surface. Can be tactile or
actual, and apparent or implied texture
by which can be detected simply by
looking in the object.
Elements of Design
Value – The relative lightness and darkness
of an object. Referred to as tone which adds
dimension to a drawing.
Elements of Design
Color – One of the most obvious
elements of design. Defined as quality
of light, as a result of the light
reflecting back from an object to our
eyes.
Principles of Design
Balance - Distribution of the visual weight of
objects, colors, texture and space. Can also
be defined as the visual equilibrium.

Symmetrical- formal balance Asymmetrical- informal balance

Principles of Design
Rhythm – Achieved by repeating any of the
elements of design in an organized and regular
way.
a. Simple- one object is being repeated
b. Composite- two objects are being repeated
c. Complex- three or more objects are being repeated
Principles of Design
Proportion – Refers to the relative size and
scale of the various elements in a design.
This indicates the relative visual size and
weight of particular object in the design
composition.
Principles of Design
Harmony - Expresses the concept of unity.
Involves selection of objects that share a
common trait.
Principles of Design
Emphasis – Sense of dominance or the
center of interest.

Activity:
Assess your personal knowledge and skills by
creating a thumbnail sketch for an outside front
cover of a story book entitled “The Gingerbread
Man” using a piece of bond paper and drawing
materials. At the back of the paper, write down
the elements of designs showcased and explain
how those elements have been applied based
on the design principles that were discussed.
