Demonstration of Flow and Level Control System Using

This document summarizes a project to design and develop a prototype flow and level control system using a programmable logic controller (PLC). The objectives are to control both the flow rate and level of water in a process tank using a PLC, and to analyze the system's performance under disturbances. Sensors measure the flow rate and level and send data to the PLC, which implements control algorithms to maintain the preset values. The team tests the system, collects data, and analyzes the actual performance compared to specifications.

•DIVYA B -1DS13IT012
•PRAKRUTHI D R-1DS13IT034

OBJECTIVE

• Design and development of prototype( demo model) of flow

and level control system.
• Control System Implementation & performance analysis of the
system.
• Implement multi loop system( flow rate and level) since
conventional control system comprises of single loop.
• Study and analyse the relationship between flow rate and level.
ABSTRACT

In present industrial scenario, processes (Temperature, flow,

level, pressure etc) are increasingly being controlled using PLC.
Advantage of this approach would be the possibility of controlling
many loops compensated by the same computing element.

The controller so designed is used to maintain a preset level

and flow rate of water in a process tank. Based on real time
samples measured by the PLC, a model of the process is created in
order to determine the controller parameters for the desired system
performance specifications (using the System Identification
Toolbox of MATLAB).
The controller implementation and performance analysis is
done on a real system. The controller parameter values are
altered and disturbance are introduced to the process to
investigate the system performance.

The collected data is then analysed and comparisons are

made between the desired and the actual performance of the
system. This demonstration model thus acts as a guidance tool
for real time system applications.

METHODOLOGY OF IMPLEMENTATION

• Study the controller modes used in the digital control of

continuous processes (level and flow rate).
• Gain knowledge of various sensors to be used in the control
system and their interfacing to the PLC.
• Use MATLAB to find the desired control specifications for the
components.
• Assemble the components and interface it to the PLC.
• Give the sensor output to the PLC whose function is defined
based on the appropriate PLC control algorithm (PLC
Software).
• Induce disturbances to study the system performance.
• The collected data is then analysed and comparisons are made
between the desired and the actual performance of the system.
• Provide solutions to reach the desired value.
