THE EFFECTS OF OIL PULLING

COMPARED TO CHLORHEXIDINE
ON ORAL BACTERIA

MARY HOWARD AND TAYLOR MOZZONE

WHAT IS OIL PULLING?
• TRADITIONAL INDIAN METHOD OF ORAL CARE.
• HISTORICALLY CALLED KAVALA GRAHA OR KAVALA GANDOOSHA

• BENEFICIAL CLAIMS TO ORAL HEALTH INCLUDE: WHITER TEETH, FRESHER BREATH, PREVENTION OF CARIES
AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE THROUGH BACTERICIDAL AND VIRICIDAL PROPERTIES, AND DETOXIFICATION
OF THE BLOOD.
• CLAIMS ALSO INCLUDE BENEFITS TO SORE THROAT, ANOREXIA, ARTHRITIS, MIGRAINES, ASTHMA, AND
HEART DISORDERS.
• GOLD STANDARD: CHLORHEXIDINE RINSE
HOW TO OIL PULL

• KAVALA GANDOOSHA: THE MOUTH IS FILLED COMPLETELY WITH OIL SO THAT GARGLING IS NOT
POSSIBLE
• KAVALA GRAHA: ONLY 1 TABLESPOON OF OIL IS USED
• ANY TYPE OF EDIBLE OIL - SESAME, SUNFLOWER, AND COCONUT OIL ARE MOST POPULAR
• IN THE MORNING, ON AN EMPTY STOMACH, OIL IS PLACED IN THE MOUTH, SWISHED, AND PULLED
BETWEEN THE TEETH FOR 15-20 MINUTES
• OIL WILL BECOME MILKY WHITE AND THIN AND IS EXPECTORATED WITHOUT SWALLOWING
• SHOULD BE FOLLOWED BY TOOTHBRUSHING AND CAN BE REPEATED UP TO 3 TIMES DAILY
RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL #1

• 20 MALE ADOLESCENTS AGED 16-18 IN INDIA

• 2 WEEK INTERVENTION PERIOD
• EFFECT OF OIL PULLING ON S. MUTANS COUNT IN PLAQUE AND SALIVA
• GROUP 1: SESAME OIL PULLING, GROUP 2: CHLORHEXIDINE RINSE
• MEASURED LEVELS OF S. MUTANS IN PLAQUE AND SALIVA USING A TEST STRIP @ 24 HOUR, 48 HOUR, 1 WEEK
AND 2 WEEKS
• CHLORHEXIDINE GROUP SHOWED A REDUCTION IN S. MUTANS AT ALL FOUR DATA COLLECTIONS
• SESAME OIL PULLING GROUP SHOWED A REDUCTION AT WEEK 1 AND 2 DATA COLLECTIONS ONLY
• CONCLUSION: OIL PULLING DOES REDUCE S. MUTANS BUT NOT AS EFFECTIVELY AS CHLORHEXIDINE RINSE
RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL #2

• 60 FEMALE COLLEGE STUDENTS IN INDIA

• 3 WEEK INTERVENTION PERIOD
• ORAL MALODOR AND MICROORGANISMS THAT CAUSE IT
• GROUP 1: SESAME OIL PULLING, GROUP 2: CHLORHEXIDINE RINSE, GROUP 3: WATER WITH DYE PLACEBO
• MEASURED PLAQUE AND GINGIVAL INDEX, ORGANOLEPTIC SCORES, ANAEROBIC BACTERIAL COLONY COUNTS
• STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN ALL AREAS WHEN COMPARING EACH GROUP TO PLACEBO
• NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INTERVENTION GROUPS
• CONCLUSION: OIL PULLING IS EQUALLY AS EFFECTIVE AS CHLORHEXIDINE IN REDUCING ORAL MALODOR
AND MICROORGANISMS CAUSING IT
RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL #1

• 60 COLLEGE STUDENTS IN INDIA

• 2 INTERVENTION PERIOD
• STREPTOCOCCUS MUTANS REDUCTION
• GROUP A: COCONUT OIL PULLING, GROUP B: CHLORHEXIDINE RINSE, GROUP C: DISTILLED WATER “CONTROL”
• SALIVA SAMPLES AND COLONY COUNTS
• STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN S. MUTANS IN BOTH STUDY GROUPS
• REDUCTION IN MEAN S. MUTANS COUNTS MORE IN CHLORHEXIDINE GROUP THAN OIL PULLING GROUP
• CONCLUSION: OIL PULLING CAN BE USED AS A NATURAL, EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE TO CHLORHEXIDINE
CONCLUSION
• LITTLE RESEARCH IS AVAILABLE ON TRADITIONAL MEDICAL PRACTICES – LIKE OIL PULLING
• NATURAL MEDICINE BECOMING VERY POPULAR WORLDWIDE
• CURRENT RESEARCH: OIL PULLING REDUCES ORAL BACTERIA AND CAN BE A NATURAL, SAFE ALTERNATIVE TO
CHLORHEXIDINE
• PROS, CONS, OPINIONS
• OIL PULLING
• TAKES TOO LONG, REQUIRES A LOT OF MOTIVATION
• EASILY AVAILABLE
• 5-6X MORE COST EFFECTIVE
• CHLORHEXIDINE
• LINGERING AFTERTASTE
• STAINING
• CAN CAUSE ALLERGIC REACTION

• MORE RESEARCH NEEDED!!

WE GAVE IT A SHOT..
