Develops Plans and Programs for Land Use
• To create new communities
• Allow for sustainable growth
• Revitalize cities and towns
Reviews and Advises on Developers’ Site Plans
• Uses economic data and environmental studies
• Advises on impact of zoning, building and
environmental regulations
• Addresses projects’ impact on basic municipal needs such as
utilities, transit, roads, schools, public safety
• Works with building and landscape architects
Meet with Government Officials about Land Use Plans
• Presents projects to planning committees
• Use feedback from government to change project where needed

Land Use
• Making sure the new project fits with existing development or
improves what is there
• Addressing building codes, neighbors and community input
Environmental
• Assess the impact the new development would have on air and
water quality, traffic, transit needs, sanitation, etc.
• Making sure the project complies with environmental laws
• Preparing detailed studies on all these issues
Usability
• Reviewing the project design to determine aspects that will attract
residents, businesses or visitors
• Working with building and landscape architects
• Ensuring it is accessible, attractive and will last a long time

What Skills Do Urban Planners Need?
• Technical writing and oral communication
• Organized and can work in team environment
• Knowledge of environmental, building, design, and even
historic preservation regulations
• Understanding of design and planning principles, including
economic, social and physical factors
• Ability to effectively interact with government agencies, and
understanding of the planning and approval process
• Can use design software such as CAD (computer-aided drafting
• Use of statistical and financial software
• Freehand drawing ability (for some positions)
