Introduction
• Hanging out with colloids
• Shaving foam and fog have in
common? They’re all colloids.
• Colloids are fluids that contain
particles which ‘hang about’. The
colloid’s particles will not settle,
no matter how long you leave
them standing
Food industry
• Present: The food colloids are
emulsions: milk, cream and mayonnaise.
It is oil-in-water emulsions while
margarine and low-fat spreads are
water-in-oil.
• New improvement: Two broad class
emulsifiers add to food.
• New research: low molecular weight
emulsifiers and macromolecular
emulsifiers such as egg or milk proteins.
• Future/target: Proteins are particularly
good emulsifiers, show stability through
both electrostatic and steric
mechanisms.
Effluent treatment
• Present:Precipitation and/or
flocculation for clarification
• Colloidal silver is the world’s most
powerful
natural antibacteria and antifungal
agent, the ability of colloidal silver to
protect against viral pathogens has,
until recently, not been fully
established by the medical community.
• New research : Colloidal Silver Beats
the Smallpox Virus
Cosmetics
• Emulsifier and surfactants are SOME of the
INGREDIENTS USED IN COSMETIC
FORMULATION.
• New research: Colloidal oat flour for skin and
hair care
• Future/target: soluble oat flour designed to
provide gelling and colloidal properties to hair
and skin care formulations
Paint industry
• Achieve homogeneous films, toughness and
'hiding' power
• New research:design and controlled
preparation of hybrid organic-inorganic
composites using colloidal particles as building
blocks
• New research : in the legion of Thickening
Agents & Colloidal stabilizer for Aqueous Latex
Paints.
Detergent industry

• Stabilisation of suspended soil, liquid abrasives

• present: manufacturers are now rethinking their whole
production lines to respond to the concerns of consumers.
• New improvement: Corporate investment strategy,
advertising, and R&D are changing from a stress on local
markets to international markets.
• New research: High Throughput Surfactant Synthesis,
Characterization and Formulation(Chris Tucker, Carol
Mohler, Keith Harris)
• Future/target: to developing these new surfactants for
potential commercial introduction involves first the
synthesis of libraries of surfactant structures with a
diversity of hydrophobe and hydophile structures.
Pharmaceutical
industry
• Stable dispersions to ensure uniform dose of active drug
• Present: medical progress undeniably, research-based
pharmaceutical companies have made enormous progress in the
treatment of many illnesses, including infectious diseases,
childhood diseases, some types of cancer, cardiovascular disease,
diabetes and hepatitis.
• New research: to ensure that people do not simply live longer, but
that they remain healthy and independent for as long as possible so
they are not dependent on care. That is also the goal for the
development of innovative drugs.
• Future/target: The prospects for pharmaceutical research have
never been more fascinating or more promising. Never have there
been better conditions for achieving medical breakthroughs and
thus commercial success.
Agricultural industry
• Present:Form modern farming that refer to
industrial production poultry , fish, and
crops. Pesticides formulated as dispersions
• New improvement:Developments in shipping
networks and technology have made long-
distance distribution of agricultural produce
feasible.
• Future/target:meat, eggs ,fruits available in
supermarket using these method
Impact of future of
colloid
• Faraday Partnership was established in
December 2000.
• Is helping to coordinate colloid research between
industry and the academic base.
• The focus : to support the design and development
of innovative materials, and the development of
new formulations, across all sectors of industry
including:
• Effluent treatment
• Paint industry
• Food industry
• Cosmetics
• Detergent industry
• Pharmaceutical industry
• Agricultural industry

Food Research Association
(CCFRA)
Bristol Colloid Centre ~UK's largest independent
(BCC) membership-based organisation
~Established in October carrying out R&D for the food and
1993. drink industry worldwide.
~ is a consultancy group
that is strongly linked to
the School of Chemistry at
the University of Bristol 3 hub
partners of
association.

Institute of Applied Catalysis (iAc)

~An independent, knowledge-based,
industrially led virtual institute dedicated to
promoting the application of catalysis
through its education, networking, and
research programmes.
conclusion
As a conclusion, it is up to us to
determine our future. According to
the our understanding, the future of
colloid will improve brightly.
