Language Acquisation

This document discusses first language acquisition through a case study of a three-year-old Lebanese child. It aims to validate theories of language acquisition by examining how nature and nurture influence the child's development. The study observes the child, interviews family members, and analyzes the data to determine if nature or nurture has a stronger impact. The findings could help educators design language programs and assist parents in supporting their children's language learning.

First language acquisation:

A case study of three-year old Lebanese child
Joel C. Meniado1
Based on these opposing views, language acquisition is
influenced and controlled by two powerful factors – heredity
(nature) and environment (nurture). The underlying question
then is that which one is more influential over the other. The
Evaluating other studies
 Though theories prescribe explanations to phenomena, they fail to
recognize different personal circumstances and individual differences.
 Theories of Chomsky, Skinner, Hymes, etc. may be true to some but
they may not be true to all individuals in all circumstances
 This study had a main purpose of validating or testing the
truthfulness of several language acquisition theories using a case of a
3 year-old Lebanese Muslim child learning Arabic as his first language
 It tried to find out if nature outweighs nurture (or vice versa) or if the
two work complimentarily in this child in his quest for language
acquisition and learning.
Significant contribution to the existing body of research

 results are expected to help teachers, educators, and curriculum developers

design more comprehensive language teaching programs responsive to broader
needs and natures of language learners.
 This study can help parents develop more understanding and awareness of their
children’s needs and interests so they can lead them towards better and more
productive language learning.
Objective

The study had a main purpose of validating or testing the

truthfulness of several language acquisition theories and
principles using a case of a 3 year-old Lebanese Muslim
child learning Arabic as his first language. It tried to find
out if nature outweighs nurture (or vice versa) or if the
two work complimentarily in this child in his quest for
language acquisition and learning.
Significance

1. The study is expected to contribute to the existing body of knowledge

on language acquisition and learning in a specific context.

2. Further, results are also expected to help teachers, educators, and

curriculum developers design more comprehensive language teaching
programs responsive to broader needs and natures of language learners.

3. Lastly, this study can help parents develop more understanding and
awareness of their children’s needs and interests so they can lead them
towards better and more productive language learning.
Research Method

• First language acquisition: A case study of a three-year old Lebanese child

The aim was to determine and describe how a child learns / acquires his first language.

Subject of the study

The subject of this case study is named Al Barraa. He is a 3-year old Muslim Lebanese born to a middle-class Arabic
family in Saudi Arabia.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher mainly gathered the data through observations, then supplemented with interviews and
questionnaires.

Mode of Analysis
The data gathered through observation notes, interviews, and recordings were analyzed based on the theories and
principles of language acquisition
Conclusion

First Language Acquisition mainly influenced by two factors

1. Biological
2. Enviromental

 Language acquisition can be complex and challenging but with teacher’s

thorough awareness and proper training, it can be fun and interesting.
Language Acquisition- Three Years Lebanese Child by Joel
Meniado

 Strength
A. In every single description, the author mention the relevant source with the topic discussion
B. More acceptable information from the author through observation and relevant source from previous studies
C. Clearly enough and easily understood for the reader
 Weakness
A. Does not mention the stages in more detail information of period
B. Missing one description and findings of the roles of language acquisition
C. In conclusion, the author didn’t restatement or summarizing from explanation in research question number one

2. First Language Acquisition by Infants

 The language structure is a complex one and acquiring such complex system by
children not long after birth is a mystery
 The way that infants learn language with remarkable ease and speed makes it an
interesting case of study (Lust, 2006).
 Children, within a few years of birth, understand the grammatical rules of their
native language without being explicitly taught
Evaluating other study

 The most important question in most of the studies done on child language
acquisition involves finding out what types of mechanisms underlie the
acquisition of human language system.
 Is conducted to crack a path to the depth of those mysterious ability.
 It is hard to Believe that infants are able to acquire the hugely complex structure
of language without being explicitly taught
Obejctive

It is difficult to believe that infants are able to acquire the hugely

complex structure of language without being explicitly taught. Children,
within a few years of birth, understand the grammatical rules of their
native language without being explicitly taught, as one learns grammar in
school. This puzzle attracts a great number of studies to the domain of
first language acquisition. Through this study done on language
acquisition by infants, it is hoped to crack a path to the depth of this
mysterious ability.
Significance

1. The study contributes to the existing theory of language

acquisation
2. The findings of the study also can help parents to more
understand about the their children development in
acquire the language.
Research Method

• First Language Acquisition by Infants

Subject of the study
The subject of this case study three infants acquiring their first language in Iran (Kerman). The infants were chosen
as typical examples of other infants to be the representative sample of Iranian infants.

Data Gathering Procedure

The study is using developmental descriptive and the data consisted of in-depth interviews, observations, audio and
video recordings, notes and reports.
Conclusion

 Children who are acquiring their first language do not reproduce their parents’
language exactly.
 Children learn language through a set system.
 As Chomsky said babies can do walking, standing or others, but those things take
time to activate.
 Strength
A.The Explanation about the stages is clear and very specific by using the period
B. Short solid in compiling information and also structured
C. Journal Writing has followed the agreed standards, and writing rules
 Weakness
A.The purpose of the study is none and still not clearly enough
B. Just only explaining about the stages, don’t touch in another relevant information
C. Nothing information about what this research will do the next
