1 FOUNDATION AND

BASEMENT

UNDERPINNING
PREPARED BY: Er. KANCHAN BHATTA
UNDERPINNING

 Process of placing a new foundation under an existing one or

strengthening an existing foundation.

 To construct a basement in existing building.

 To strengthen shallow foundation of existing building when building

with deep foundation is to be constructed adjoining it.

 To deepen existing foundation (resting on poor strata) so as to rest it

on deeper soil strata of high bearing power.

2
 Quite an expensive process.
UNDERPINNING

SEQUENCE OF OPERATION

 Suitable holes driven through wall and

needle beam is inserted.

 Needle beam is placed on wooden

block in one side and other side is
supported on jack.

 Excavation is started below foundation

and footing of foundation is reached. 3
UNDERPINNING

SEQUENCE OF OPERATION

 Excavation of trench should be slightly

wide so that trench goes under the
foundation.

 Sides placed by Timbering.

• The offset of the foundation is cutoff

and removed.
4
UNDERPINNING

SEQUENCE OF OPERATION

• Excavation is reached to
defined depth.

• New foundation is laid in the

desired depth.

UNDERPINNING

METHODS OF UNDERPINNING

A. PIT METHOD

i. Ordinary

 Entire length of foundation to be

underpinned is divided into
sections of 1.2-1.5m lengths.

 One section taken at a time.

7
UNDERPINNING

METHODS OF UNDERPINNING

A. PIT METHOD

i. Ordinary

 For each section, hole is made in wall

above plinth level and needle inserted
in hole.

 Needle of either timber or steel section.

8
 Bearing plates placed above needle to
support masonry above it.
UNDERPINNING

METHODS OF UNDERPINNING

A. PIT METHOD

i. Ordinary

 Needle supported on either sides of wall

on crib support and screw jack.

 Foundation pit then excavated to desired

level and new foundation is laid.

 When work of section is over then work 9

on next to next section is taken.
UNDERPINNING

METHODS OF UNDERPINNING

A. PIT METHOD

ii. Cantilever

 If interior strong column exists, or if

foundation is to be extended only to
one side, cantilever needles may be
used

10
UNDERPINNING

METHODS OF UNDERPINNING

B. PILE METHOD

 Useful in clayey soils and water

logged areas.

 Piles are driven at regular intervals

along both sides of wall.

 Bore holes or under-reamed piles

may be used. 11
UNDERPINNING

METHODS OF UNDERPINNING

B. PILE METHOD

 Piles connected by concrete or

steel needles, penetrating
through walls.

 Beams act as pile caps.
