TANTALUM
Tantalum is a chemical element with
symbol Ta and atomic number 73.
Tantalum is a rare, shiny, blue-gray and dense
metal, it is very hard, malleable and highly
ductile metal, and it is chemical properties are
very similar to those of niobium.
First discovered by the Swedish chemist
Anders Ekeberg in 1802
Tantalum is highly corrosion resistant due
to the formation of an oxide film. It is an
excellent conductor of heat and electricity.
The metal has a melting point exceeded
only by tungsten and rhenium. Tantalum is
one of the five major refractory metals
(metals with very high resistance to heat
and wear).
(The other refactory metals are tungsten, molybdenum,
rhenium and niobium. )
Structure
Tantalum exists in two crystalline phases, alpha
and beta:
The alpha phase is relatively ductile and soft;
it has body-centered cubic structure.
The beta phase is hard and brittle; its crystal
symmetry is tetragonal. The beta phase is
metastable and converts to the alpha phase
upon heating to 750–775 °C.
Applpications
Tantalum is used in the electronics industry for capacitors
and high-power resistors in electronic equipment such as
mobile phones, DVD players, video games, systems and
computers.
It is also used to make alloys to increase strength,
ductility and corrosion resistance.
Tantalum is used in dental and surgical instruments and
implants; because it’s completely immune to body liquids.
Capacitors
The element is also used to make chemical process equipment, nuclear
reactors, aircraft and missile parts.
The chemical inertness of tantalum makes it a valuable substance for
laboratory equipment and a substitute for platinum.
Tantalum oxide is used to make special glass with high index of refraction
for items such as camera lenses.
