Mix Design Japanese Code

This document outlines the Japanese method for proportioning concrete mixtures. It lists the design constraints and initial data required, such as maximum aggregate size, moisture content, and desired characteristic strength. The method is then shown step-by-step, determining water content, cement content, aggregate contents, and ensuring design requirements are met for a sample mixture with a specified 30MPa strength and 80mm slump value. Key mixture proportions are listed at the end for the sample design.

Design Constraints:-
• Plant Requirement
• Availability of materials & Quality
• Economy of design inclusive of transportation cost
• Performance of concrete
1. Workability
2. Characteristic Strength
3. Durability Requirements
4. Customer satisfaction & Maintaining Construction Records
Initial Data Required
1. Type of Sand= Natural sand
2. Grain size Distribution & Fineness Modulus of sand= 2.8
3. Maximum Size of Coarse Aggregate= 20mm
4. Surface Moisture of aggregates= 3%
5. Apparent Density of aggregates= 1597 kg/m 3
6. Type of Binder= PPC
7. Mineral or Chemical Admixture Specification= S.P.
8. Entrapped air or Entrained air in %= 2%
9. Reinforcing Bars= Fe415
10. Deformed Bars= Fe415
11. Characteristic Strength= 30MPa
12. Slump value= 80mm
13. Height of Compaction= 100cm
14. Segregation Resistance= moderate
15. Durability
1. Specified Strength = Characteristic Strength or preferably greater
Assuming for M30 =  38.15MPa  & 5% variation
                 fc‘= fc3.5+2.33∂
2. Maximum water content

For our design considering max. 50% i.e. 0.5 w/c
3.   N.M.S.A. = 20mm
So Adopting 80mm slump value
5. Water Content range- 155-175kg/m3
Unit Bulk volume of  CA= 0.62 m3/m3
s/a=  45%

or
No correction for s/a ratio
Water Content = 165kg/m3 (155-175kg/m3)
Correction for 4% lower air content increase by 12%
Hence, 165+165*0.12= 184.8kg/m3 >175kg/m3
•Reduction in water = 15% reduction (using 1.37% SP)
184.8 - 184.8*0.15 = 155 kg/m3 <157.08 kg/m3 < 175kg/m3
•From past experience
w/c= 0.45 for M30
•Hence, C. Material Content= 349.067 kg/m3 > 270kg/m3 (min)
• Hence, Using 10% of CM Class F fly ash as powder content
(2.3.2 & 2.3.3, 3.2.2.)
• F.A= 349.067 * 0.1 = 34.9067 kg/m3
• Cement Content= 349.067 – 34.067 = 314.16 kg/m3
• SP content= 349.067*0.0137= 4.78 kg/m3
(Using S.P.= 1.37% by wt. of Cement Material)
Calculation of CA content and Sand content
Bulk Density of CA= 1597 kg/m3
Hence, CA content= 1597*0.62 = 990.14 kg/m3
Sand= sand/ aggregate= 0.45
Hence, sand= 810.114 kg/m3
Density of concrete= 810.114 + 990.14 + 349.067 + 4.78 +
157.08 = 2311 kg/m3 but 2% is entrapped air
2311*0.02= 46.22 kg/m3
Henceforth the net concrete density = 2311+46.22=
2357.22 kg/m3 ≈2355 kg/m3
Hence ok.
For M30 & slump of 80mm

Water Content 157.08 kg/m3
Cement Content 314.1603 kg/m3
Flyash Content 34.9067 kg/m3
Coarse aggregate 990.14 kg/m3
Sand  810.114 kg/m3
w/c 0.45
Super plasticizer 4.78 kg/m3
Air Content 46.22 kg/m3
