Tungtong River
● Creek
● Located in and around Beverly Hills Subd
● 15 km, connected to Pasig River via Manggahan floodway

Spiders - Anatomy

● Unsegmented body

● Eight-legged

● Exoskeleton

● Fused head and thorax

-(Cephalothorax)

● Rounded abdomen

● Almost all are Venomous

Spiders (Schowalter 1995, Ferrier et al. 2004)

● Main predator in Terrestrial environment

● Spiders are excellent bio indicators

● Controls insect population

○ Prevents diseases
○ Protects crops

● Biological control agent

Objectives

● To assess the relative abundance of spiders in Tungtong

river

● Characterize and define the structure and composition of

the sampled plots.

● Compare the spider families with the different plots

Significance
● Spiders are excellent bio-indicators.

● Our study will be a contribution to the baseline study of spider

diversity in Tungtong river.

● It will help lead to better conservation and preservation of

spider diversity in Tungtong river
Methodology

Mark 10x10m plots

(distance of 50m) Collect samples for
along the 30 mins (6-8PM)
Tungtong River

Place the spiders in

Submerge the individual vials or
spiders in 70% ethyl plastic containers
alcohol (for larger spiders)
Methodology

Identify the spiders Make a list of the spider

using spider eye species, and make a

Recommendations

● More plots & more habitat characters

● Better equipment

● Identify to species level

● Conduct sampling during the wet season
