Aggressive Monitoring

Teachers will learn how to use aggressive monitoring to check student understanding during independent practice. Aggressive monitoring involves circulating around the classroom with a pen and clipboard to provide immediate feedback to students. The feedback is coded so that teachers can track which students are meeting the objectives. It informs instruction by allowing mid-lesson interruptions or small group pull outs to address misconceptions. Students receive high quality feedback and stay on task, leading to increased learning outcomes. Teachers will practice developing their own coding system and reflect on implementing aggressive monitoring.

NBPTS: Proposition 3: Teachers Regularly Assess Student Progress

In the next 60 seconds, write down a list of
instructional strategies teachers use to monitor
student learning?

Think-Pair-Share
Now share with your elbow partner an instructional strategy
that you like use to monitor student learning? Why?
What is Aggressive Monitoring?

where you monitor students aggressively during
independent practice in order to check for
understanding.
•Independent practice is the single most critical
time for teachers to change learning outcomes.
Aggressive Monitoring During Math
Instruction
•Students get immediate high quality feedback during
math independent practice.
•Informs instruction
• mid lesson interruption to address misconceptions
• small group pull out
• reteach the lesson differently
•Increase student learning outcomes
•Students stay on task

NOW YOU TRY
Create a coding system you can use to give students
feedback on their math work.

Work with your grade level team to brainstorm ideas.

Make sure coding system is aligned to the Common Core

Math Standard.

•Students are held accountable for their
work.
•More students are meeting the lesson
