Design and Construction of A Single Phase Transformer

This document summarizes the design and construction of a single phase transformer with ratings of 220V/40V and 30VA. It details the materials used and their costs, provides calculations for determining the primary and secondary coil turns and wire gauges, describes the step-by-step construction procedure, and presents the results of no load and load tests, including efficiency and voltage regulation calculations. The conclusion emphasizes that careful adherence to design rules is required to successfully construct the transformer.

MATERIALS AND COST

• Bobbin: 30/-
• Masking tape: 30/-

WHAT IS TRANSFORMER???

A transformer is a static device which transfers electrical energy from one circuit
to another through the process of electromagnetic induction. It is most
commonly used to increase (‘step up’) or decrease (‘step down’) voltage levels
between circuits.
CALCULATION FOR PRIMARY &
SECONDARY COIL TURNS AND AWG

• Ip=30/(220*0.96)=0.142A
• Is=30/(40*0.96)=0.78A
• AWG: Primary=35 & Secondary=28
• Bobbin size=4*3.3=13.20cm^2
• Te=42/13.20=3.18turns/volt
• Primary coil turns=3.18*220=700turns
• Secondary coil turns=3.18*40=128turns
CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURE

1. First we have to turn the primary coil.

2. Then we covered the primary coil with waxed paper for insulation.
3. Then we have to turn the secondary coil.
4. Then we have to cover the coil with masking tape.
5. Finally we have to cover the bobbin with E & I shape core.
No Load Test

Vp=220V
Vs=40.2V
Sp=9Watt
Ss=1Watt
Ip=0.08A
Is=0.01A
Load Test
Vp=220V
Vs=38.6V
Sp=38Watt
Ss=30Watt
Ip=0.19A
Is=0.74A

Calculation:
Is=30/40=0.75A
RL=40/0.75=53ohm
Voltage Regulation(%VR):
%VR=((40-38.6)/38.6)*100=3.63%

Efficiency:
%η=(30/38)*100=79%
Conclusion

In conclusion we can say that transformer brings a revolutionary changes in

electric field.
But to constract this transformer we have to follow some careful rules such
as:
1.We must use thin wire in the primary & fat ware in the secondary.
2.We have to insulate the primary coil & secondary coil properly by using
waxed paper.
3.We have to take the bobbin size properly.
4.We have to cover the bobbin with E & L shape core properly.
