Time Division Switching TDS

This document discusses time division switching (TDS) and its advantages over space division switching (SDS). TDS uses sampled speech values that are switched in a time division manner, allowing a switching element to be shared among multiple calls simultaneously. This results in much greater savings in terms of the number of switching elements needed compared to SDS, where a switching element is dedicated to a single call for its entire duration. The document provides examples of analog TDS, which switches pulse amplitude modulation samples, and digital TDS, which switches pulse code modulation binary samples in a time division manner.

Problems in SDS
Single Stage SDS (200 x 200 SW ) used 40000 SEs
Too Bulky, Unmanageable, Rigid, No Flexibility, No
...Internal Div. but Non-Blocking, FAST, BQL

stage SDS (200 x 200 SW) used 15200 SEs (by 20 small-3

…of SEs, but Blocking, Slow, DQL
Problems in SDS
But in SDS the SE (X-Point) once allotted
remains dedicated to ONE ACTIVE speech cct.
i.e. continuous Analog speech waveform passes
thru the Switch in Space Div. Swg (SDS) for its
..entire duration of call

Principle of TDS
Sampled Values of speech are used in TDS as •
PAM values or •
PCM Binary words •
A sample occurs every 125 Microsec for SR of 8 •
KHz
A sample value can pass from Inlet to Outlet very •
FAST
Hence the dedicated SE remains Un-Used for most •
of the Time (120 us)
We can assign this FREE SE to a no of I/O Pairs •
for remaining 120 us
Principle of TDS
Thus we can SHARE a SE (X-Point) for a no •
.of simultaneously active speech ccts
This is the PRINCIPLE of TDS •
Much greater Saving can be achieved in •
terms of no of Swg Elements as against SDS

Introduction
Digital or Time Division Switching evolved from Time
Division Multiplexing (TDM).
In TDM, each 8 bit binary coded voice sample from
the PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) process is assigned
a time slot in a recurring time frame.
Digital (Time Division) Switching
In digital switching, information bits contained in
a time slot of a TDM system are transferred to a
time slot in another TDM system.
TSI in Time Division Switching

The timeslot interchange (TSI) is

achieved using speech sample stores
and clocking stores.
These rearrange the order of time slot
read-outs under the control of an
internal clock.
Such a switch is appropriately called a
‘Time switch’.

When more than two TDMs are involved it is
necessary to switch links between them at time slot
intervals.
