Geometric Sequences: Lesson 2

This document provides an overview of geometric sequences including: - Defining a geometric sequence as a sequence where each term is found by multiplying the previous term by a constant ratio - The formula for the nth term of a geometric sequence as an = a1rn-1, where an is the nth term, a1 is the first term, r is the common ratio, and n is a positive integer - Examples of finding a particular term, the nth term, using another term and the ratio, and finding geometric means of terms in a geometric sequence.

Lesson 2

Geometric
Sequences
Objectives:
 Definea geometric sequence and related
terms such as the common ratio and
geometric mean.
 Find the nth term of a geometric sequence.
 Determinethe order of the given term on the
given geometric sequence.
Geometric Sequence
A sequence in which each term after the first is found by
multiplying the previous term by a constant r called the
common ratio.

The nth term 𝑎𝑛 of a geometric sequence with

first term 𝑎1 and common ratio r is given by
𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎1 𝑟 𝑛−1 , where n is any positive integer.
