Automatic Railway Gate Control System

This document presents a solar powered automatic railway crossing system. The system uses sensors to detect an approaching train and a microcontroller to control the railway gate and alarm. When a train is sensed, the microcontroller triggers an alarm and closes the gate to prevent traffic from crossing. It then reopens the gate once the train has passed. The system aims to automate unmanned railway crossings for safety. Key hardware includes IR sensors, a microcontroller, DC motors to operate the gate, and a solar powered supply.

abstract

 The aim of this project is to Automate unmanned railway gate using mec
hatronics.

 PROJECT DEFINATION: The objective of this project is to manage

the control system of railway gate using the microcontroller.
INTRODUCTION
 The objective of this project is to manage the control system of railway gate using
the microcontroller. When train arrives at the sensing point alarm is triggered at t
he railway crossing point so that the people get intimation that gate is going to be
closed.
 8051 Microcontroller: Various features of 8051 microcontroller are given as follow
s.
 8-bit CPU
 16-bit Program Counter
 8-bit Processor Status Word (PSW)
 8-bit Stack Pointer
 Internal RAM of 128bytes
 Special Function Registers (SFRs) of 128 bytes
 32 I/O pins arranged as four 8-bit ports (P0 - P3)
 Two 16-bit timer/counters : T0 and T1
 Two external and three internal vectored interrupts
 One full duplex serial I/O

INTRODUCTION ON EMBEDDED SYSTEMS

An Embedded system is a combination of computer hardware and software, and perhaps additional
mechanical or other parts, designed to perform a specific function.

The common design requirement include –

 Processing power
 Memory
 Development cost
 Number of Units
 Expected Lifetime
 Reliability

HARDWARE DISCRIPTION

 DC GEARED MOTOR
 Construction and Operating the DC GEARED MOTOR.
IR CIRCUITS:This circuit has two stages: a transmitter unit and a receiver un
it. The transmitter unit consists of an infrared LED and its associated circuitry.

IR TRANSMITTER:The IR LED emitting infrared light is put on in the tr

ansmitting unit. To generate IR signal, 555 IC based astable multivibrator is use
d. Infrared LED is driven through transistor BC 548.

IR RECEIVER:The receiver unit consists of a sensor and its associated circui

try. In receiver section, the first part is a sensor, which detects IR pulses transm
itted by IR-LED.
 POWER SUPPLY:
To run the electronic gadget at home it is provided by some power s
upply. The microcontroller used (8051) requires 12v D.C supply.

For design of a regulated power supply components used are:

 Transformer.
 Diodes.
 Rectifiers.
 Regulated IC chips.
 Capacitive filters.
CONCLUSIONS:
Hence the Unmanned railway gates operate according to the data input from
sensors to microcontroller. First an alarm is triggered and then the gate is op
erated.

Specifications:
 Mechanical gate arrangement

 8051 microcontroller
 IR sensors for sensing train

 Dc geared motor to operate gates

 L293 for driving DC geared motor
