STEP- UP Transformer
• A transformer in which the
voltage across the secondary
coil is higher than the Primary
coil is called Step-up
transformer
• Transformer turn ration is
Approximately Proportional
to the voltage ratio.
Working Principal
• A step up transformer has lesser number of turns in primary coil and
higher number of turns in secondary coil. Both the coils are not in
connection directly. They are bound on magnetic core. As the voltage
is applied to the primary coil, a magnetic flux is produced in the core.
In this way the voltage induced in the secondary coil is higher than
the primary coil.
Working of step-up transformer
• Alternating current passed
through the primary coil which
creats a changing magnetic field in
the iron core. The changing
magnetic field induces alternating
current of the same frequency in
the secondary coil. Since a step up
transformer has more turns in
primary coil than on the
Secondary coil , which makes a
larger induced voltage in the
secondary coil.
Relationship B/w Voltage and Number of
Turns:
The transformer equation relates to the number of turns of wire to the difference in
voltage between the primary and secondary coil.
• Vp/Vs = Np/Ns
• Where Vp is the voltage in primary coil and Vs is the voltage in secondary coil
• Np is the number of turns of wire on primary coil
• Ns is the number of turns on the secondary coil.
Power
• The power equation shows that that the overall power remains the
same.
•P=VxI
• But in reality the output power is always less than the input power
because changing magnetic field in the core creats current ( Eddy
current) which heats the core. This heat is lost in the environment.
Application Of Step-Up Transformer
• Step-up transformer is used in transmission lines for transforming the
high voltage produced by the alternator. The power loss of the
transmission line is directly proportional to the square of current
flows through it. P = I² R
• It is also used for starting the electric motor, in the microwave oven ,
X-Rays Machine, etc
