INTODUCTION
 Electric power distribution is an important part of electrical power
Parala Maharaja Engineering College

system in delivery of electricity to consumer. Automation in the

distribution field allows utilities to implement flexible control of
distribution system, which can be used increase efficiency, reliability,
and quality of electric service.

 The word of automation means doing the particular task

automatically in a sequence with faster operation rate. This requires
the use of microprocessor together with communication network and
some relevant programming

 Application of automation in distribution power system level can

be define as automatically monitoring, protecting and controlling
switching operation through intelligent electronic device.

DISRIBUTION SUBSTATION AUTOMATION

Parala Maharaja Engineering College

 SOME REQUIRED THINGES FOR SUBSTATION AOTOMATION

1. Transfer load balancing: It provided load balance monitoring access to near real
time information concearing the overall operation of the distribution.

2. Voltage regulation : it can use to reduce line voltage during peak time by
remotely taking control of the load tap changer.

3. Fuse isolation and sectionalizing : remote monitoring of recloser operation to the

melting of fuse link ,utilities can detect the fault very fast and very take quick
action to clear the fault.

4. Remote interconnect switching : Distribution automation system can be deployed

to drive remotely intreconnected switches that separet different portion of the
utility distribution feeders.

5. Capacitor bank switching : it most commonly deployed automation

technique in a distribution network .It can operate with reduce losses
and as a result with higher efficiency.

6. Voltage monitoring : it use to monitoring the feeder voltage also

recorded data of feeder voltages will give snapshot of the actual usage
patterns.

7. Remote Fault Indicators :Remove fault indicators are sensors detect

when voltage and current level on feeders are outside normal operating
boundaries. Operators can use this information to rapidly determine the
location of fault (such as an equipment failure or tree contacting a power
line),or distinguish between a fault and temporary high loads, such as
high motor starting current.
8. Smart relays: smart relays apply sophisticated software to accurately
detect, isolate, and diagnose the cause of fault. This may be install in
utilities substation for feeder protection or on device in automated
switching scheme

CONSUMER LOCATION AUTOMATION

Parala Maharaja Engineering College

Consumer location most challenging application area of

the distribution automation system here large number of
installation points required and all the point should be
economically viable
 Load management
Load management achieved by local appliance control.
 Automatic meter reading
For utilities, AMR is one of the cost effective way to read the residential kilowatt-hour
meter.
 Demand side management
This application includes the functionality of the monitoring the power usage during the
specific period of the day as well as control functionality of notifying the consumer change
of the period and new rate of that period. For some utilities this cost not effective.

 Quality of Service Monitoring:

Quality of service is different things to different utilities. The most comprehensive
definition including monitoring power outage and its duration, the track record of power
distribution (such as voltage blink , harmonic and voltage sags ), and monitoring voltage
wave-form distortion.

 Remote Terminal Unit (RTU):

A remote terminal unit is an IED that can be installed in a remote location, and acts as a
termination point for field contacts.

 Communication Network:
Communication networks allows utilities to connect device to each other and to SCADA,
DMS, and other information and control system, which greatly expand capabilities of grid
operator to manage power flow and address reliability issues.

TECHNICAL CHALLENGES FOR DISTRIBUTION

AUTOMATION FUNCTIONS
Parala Maharaja Engineering College

Electronic equipment
Electronic equipment covers all field equipment which is computer based or microprocessor
based, including controller remote terminal units (RTUs) etc.it can included the actual power
equipment, such as switches, capacitors bank, or breaker
 Communication system
Communication system cover not only the media (e.g. fiber optic, microwave, GPRS, multiple
address radio MAS, satellite etc.) but also different types of protocols.
Data management
Data management covers all aspect of collecting analyzing storing, and providing data to user
and application , including the issues of data identification , management methods which work
well for small amount of data can fail or become too burdensome for large amount of data – a
situation common in distribution automation and consumer information.

 System Integration:
Parala Maharaja Engineering College

system integration covers the networking and exchange of information among

multiple disparate systems. The key issues include interoperability of
interconnected system, cyber security, access control, data identity across system
etc.

 Software Application:
Software application covers the program, algorithms, calculation, data analysis
and other software that provides software capabilities to distribution automation.
