Robotic Arm: Theem College of Engineering

The document describes a robotic arm. It provides background on robotic arms, noting they function similarly to human arms and have rotational or translational joints. The document then reviews the history of robotics, including George Devol inventing the first industrial robot. It also discusses current areas of robotic research like artificial intelligence, mobility, sensors, and control systems. Finally, it reviews two past studies on a wireless mobile robotic arm and an internet-controlled robotic arm.

Introduction
• A robotic arm is a type of mechanical arm,
usually programmable, with similar functions to
a human arm; the arm may be the sum total
of the mechanism or may be part of a more
complex robot.
• The links of such a manipulator are connected
by joints allowing either rotational motion
(such as in an articulated robot) or
translational (linear) displacement.
• It has about the same number of degree of
freedom as in human arm.

3
Robotic History
• George Charles Devol, often called
the father of robotics, invented the
first industrial robot, the Unimate, in
1954. A few years later, Devol and
entrepreneur Joseph F. Engelberger
were discussing interested at a part
and their company, Unimation, was
born.

Robotics - Current Research
The robots of tomorrow will be the direct
result of the robotic research projects of
today. The goals of most robotic research
projects is the advancement of abilities in
one or more of the following technological
areas:
Artificial intelligence, effectors and
mobility, sensor detection and especially
robotic vision, and control systems.

Literature Review
• Wireless Mobile Robotic Arm(2012): This paper presents the development of a
wireless mobile robot arm. A mobile robot that functional to do pick and place
operation and be controlled by using wireless PS2 controller. The limitation of this
paper is the robotic camera doesn’t has camera so the working not accurate and
it not recognize the object.

• Internet Controlled Robotic Arm(2012): This paper presents the development of an

internet controlled robotic arm. The movement of the robot arm can be controlled
by a computer via the internet. The limitation of this paper is person who is going to
operate robotic arm has computer knowledge. Also the paralyze person can not
operate this arm.
