SMART HYDROPONICS SYTEM INTRODUCTION
As the world population rapidly increases, demands of people also increase. Threat in food
security is a rising problem we must consider. Food security is defined as the availability of food and
one’s access to it. The World Food Summit of 1996 defined food security as existing “when people at
all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life”.
SMART HYDROPONICS SYTEM INTRODUCTION
Taking these issues into account, an engineering problem arises: how to make the growth
of plants more efficient and possible in different and challenging environments taking also into account
the limited land space and water resource.
Why Hydroponics?
?
SMART HYDROPONICS SYTEM INTRODUCTION
How to make the growth of plants more efficient and possible in different and challenging
environments especially on high valued crops?
How to maximize the crop growth final weight while minimizing control costs and the cultivation
period.
SMART HYDROPONICS SYTEM INTRODUCTION
Build a physical smart hydroponics system with all required sensors, actuators and computers.
Develop the optimal control software to efficiently reduce acting costs while increasing crop
growth.
Implement a graphical user interface and incorporate plants’ datasheet into the system
Construct a compact, durable, and efficient hydroponics system for use in all environments and
locations (indoor/outdoor).
Develop a system that can be used by both entry-level and expert users.
Provide real-time system monitoring in order to aid the user throughout the growth cycle of their
desired produce via text messages notification from the system.
Educate and inspire users to continue to foster an interest in hydroponic as a way to grow their
very own food, no matter where they live.
SMART HYDROPONICS SYTEM INTRODUCTION
The system includes different types of plants which datasheets for ideal growing and culture
are already embedded into the system. The user will choose which type of plant the system will grow
automatically.
The proponents focused on growing lettuce plants and analyze the efficiency and reliability of
the system on the growth of the desired plant.
Moreover, the proponents uses GSM technology to notify the users using text messages
about the condition of the hydroponics system which include the water temperature status, water level
status, and pH level status.

A Review on Smart Sensors Based Monitoring System for Agriculture (Swarup et.al, 2013)
The proposed system is mainly developed for the betterment of farmers. The use wireless
sensor network over the wired one helps for deploying it in any type of environment for monitoring,
making it flexible and robust. The use of FPGA element facilitates the system for re-configurability
and re-programmability according to different environmental conditions.
The Design and Implementation of a Hydroponics Control System (Griffiths et. al, 2014)
The objective of the thesis was to create a working hydroponic controller, which is cheap and
simple enough to build. It will monitor and control the key environmental ingredients needed for
successful hydroponic growing, chiefly the pH, EC, air and water levels. Visual alarms will be raised if
these go outside of predefined ranges. The controller will also be able to control external hardware,
such as lights, water heater and a water pump.

A Reliable Wireless Control System for Tomato Hydroponics (Ibayashi & Kaneda et. al, 2016)
The researchers proposed a highly reliable wireless control system for hydroponic tomato
cultivation and implemented a system prototype that can be reliably controlled using the 400 MHz band
and IEEE 802.15.6 standard. In summary, the researchers achieved a real-time hydroponic liquid
supply control with no data loss by applying a 400 MHz band WSN to hydroponic tomato cultivation.
The system is implemented in a greenhouse environment.
The key objective of this project is to present low-cost solar-powered Smart Hydroponic
Greenhouse. Smart Hydroponic Greenhouse is divided into two parts: Hydroponic Greenhouse System
and Solar Power Unit. The researchers concluded that by using maximum energy resources like solar
panel and water we can grow hydroponics plants like tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, etc., by
controlling the process parameters using control panel. Which leads to creating more energy efficient
and eco-
friendly system. It will be beneficial to the society to create better and greener tomorrow.

Fully Automated Hydroponic System for Indoor Plant Growth (Palande et.al, 2018)
The purpose of the project, Titan Smartponics, is to expand and improve the utilization of
hydroponics as well as to create an environmentally independent system for indoor plant growth. The
goal of the Titan Smartponics project is to make a system that is cost-effective and, most importantly, is
completely automated and requires virtually no human interaction after placing the germinated plant
into the system.
Internet of Things for Planting in Smart Farm Hydroponics Style (Pitakphongmetha et al, 2016)
The IoT’s devices contain Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), various sensors, and
computing node. The system needs to have an Internet connection so that these devices can send and
receive data to communicate not only Internet network, but also with other IoT’s devices.
Sensor technologies are intended for the automatic control devices via mobile accurate
correctly. This technology will save time to look for vegetables which people can eat healthy. Farmers
need some helps in the different stages of crop growth and the guidance should be given at the right
time. Farmers are suffering a lot of problem; economy, social, and politics. Various challenges in
agricultural domain are identified.
