Overview of Hospital Information System: Asmaripa Ainy FKM-Unsri

Hospital information systems (HIS) integrate information technology into hospital management and patient care by collecting, storing, and analyzing patient data to improve clinical outcomes and administrative functions. A HIS supports all areas of a hospital through integrated clinical and business applications that manage patient records, scheduling, billing, and linking to other systems. The goal of a HIS is to enhance patient care and administration through the electronic collection and sharing of patient information across departments.

HOSPITAL INFORMATION SYSTEM
 One that supports all hospital functions and
activities such as patient records, scheduling,
administration, charge-back and billing, and
often links to or includes clinical information
systems such as RIS (Radiology Information
System )
 HIS in which computer systems are used as
ICT-tools (information and communication
technology )
Hospital information system
(HIS) is intersection of:
1.Information science
2.Technology
3.Healthcare
INFORMATION SCIENCE is an interdisciplinary science
primarily concerned with the collection, classification,
manipulation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of
information.

Information science is often (mistakenly) considered a branch

of computer science. However, it is actually a broad,
interdisciplinary field, incorporating not only aspects of
computer science, but often diverse fields such as cognitive
science, commerce, communications, law, library science,
management, mathematics, public policy, and the social
sciences.
COMPUTER SCIENCE (or computing science) is the
study of the theoretical foundations of information and
computation, and of practical techniques for their
implementation and application in computer systems. It is
frequently described as the systematic study of algorithmic
processes that describe and transform information

Computer science focuses on the challenges in making

computers and computations useful, usable, and universally
accessible to people.
HEALTHCARE refers to the treatment and
management of illness, and the preservation of health
through services offered by the medical,
pharmaceutical, dental, clinical laboratory sciences
(in vitro diagnostics), nursing, and allied health
professions.

Health care embraces all the goods and services

designed to promote health, including “preventive
and curative interventions, whether directed to
individuals or to populations

WHY HIS?
The question is not
whether a hospital should be equipped with a
hospital information system or not,
but an appropriate question would be ...
whether the performance should be enhanced,
for example, by using state of the art ICT-tools

HIS must consider all areas of a hospital:

wards
outpatient units
service units (diagnostic and therapy)
administrative departments
management/executive units
HIS must consider all groups of persons:
 Physicians
 Nurses
 Administrative staff
Technical staff
Health informaticians
Health manager

... and last, but not least,

 Patients
 Visitors
 Suppliers

Benefits of HIS
Investment in HIS may result in many benefits (WHO):
• helping decision makers to detect and control emerging and
endemic health problems, monitor progress towards health
goals, and promote equity;
• empowering individuals and communities with timely and
understandable health-related information, and drive
improvements in quality of services;
• strengthening the evidence base for effective health policies,
permitting evaluation of scale-up efforts, and enabling
innovation through research;
• improving governance, mobilising new resources, and
ensuring accountability in the way they are used.
Hospital requires data in order to:
 Assess the impact of program interventions

 Prioritize policies and strategies

 Adapt to reforms

 Obtain information pertinent to new styles,

participants, and locations of (health) services
management and decision-making
