Lesson study is a model of teacher professional development that originated in Japan. It involves a small group of teachers working together in cycles to plan, teach, observe, refine and review specific lessons. The focus is on addressing identified student learning needs. The lesson study cycle consists of: 1) planning a detailed lesson, 2) one teacher teaching while others observe and take notes, 3) a post-observation discussion to revise the lesson, 4) a second teacher teaching the revised lesson while others observe, and 5) a final discussion of outcomes. Lesson study fosters collaboration and a shared understanding of effective teaching practices.
