Common Issues
• Bottom Bushing wears out
• Trunnions wear out
• Top drives will always creep down
Top Drive Mounting Plate
The top drive is connected to the feed cylinder by trunnion caps.
Top Drive Mounting Plate
The trunnion caps are slotted to allow play between the top drive mounting plate and the feed
cylinder. The play is necessary to avoid damage to the rod threads during makeup and
breakout.
Top Drive Mounting Plate
The top drive is fastened to the mounting plate using eight ¾” bolts.
Top Drive Mounting Plate
The top drive mounting plate slides up and down the mast on V-guides that hold it to the mast.
Top Drive Mounting Plate
To stop metal-on-metal contact, two dovetail sliders are installed on the back of the mounting
plate. This protects the face of the mast.
Top Drive Mounting Plate
The V-guides need to be adjusted to keep the plate tight to the mast. A drill with a tight
mounting plate produces an accurate hole and will have less downtime than a drill with
loose guides.
