Objectives
1. To learn basic concept of
Prestressed Concrete Design
(PCD).
2. To know the difference of PCD
and Reinforced Concrete Design

BASIC CONCEPTS

INTRODUCTION
BASIC CONCEPT
Linear prestressing – a prestressing principle that
is applied longitudinally along or parallel to the axis
of the member.
Circular prestressing – used in liquid containment
tanks, pipes, and pressure reactor vessels,
essentially follows the same basic principles ad does
linear prestressing. Sometimes called “hugging”
stress.

HISTORICAL
DEVELOPMENT OF
PRESTRESSING
BASIC CONCEPTS
Eugène Freyssinet – French structural and civil engineer. He was the major
pioneer of prestressed concrete.
Tung-Yen —T.Y.— Lin was a famous bridge engineer, an educator, and a
brilliant innovator. His deep obsession with prestressed concrete gave him
the title, —the father of prestressed concrete.— He loved the product so
much, his own home in El Cerrito, Calif., became the first residential
structure to be comprised of it.
Prestressed concrete is not a new concept, dating back to 1872, when P.H.
Jackson, an engineer in California, patented a prestressing system that
used a tie rod to construct beams or arches from individual blocks.
In 1888, C.W. Doehring of Germany obtained a patent for prestressing
slabs with metal wires. But these early attempts at prestressing were not
really successful because of the loss of the prestress with time. J. Lund of
Norway and G.R. Steiner of the United States tried early in the twentieth
century to solve this problem.

Advantages &
Disadvantages of
Prestressed Concrete
Advantages
These members are free from cracks as concrete is
under compression.
It is more durable than Reinforced concrete.
The sections are smaller compared to reinforced
concrete sections hence they can also be used for
longer spans.
Also as sections are smaller they can be transported
easily.
11
Advantages &
Disadvantages of
Prestressed Concrete
Disadvantages
It needs specialist construction tools like jacks,
anchors, wedges, etc.
Very strict supervision and qualification as per
normative documents
High tensile strength steel with ultimate strength of
1850 MPa needed for cables. Hence the cost is
more.
Skilled labour is needed for construction.
