Milling Machine Presentation

The document provides an overview of milling machines. It begins with an introduction to metal machining processes and defines milling as a machining process that uses rotary cutters to remove material from a workpiece. It then covers the history of milling machines, the basic concepts including up and down milling, and the main types of milling machines such as horizontal and vertical. The document also describes common milling operations and cutter types. It concludes with advantages of milling machines such as faster material removal and ability to mount multiple cutters.

INTRODUCTION TO METAL
MACHINING
Improved manufacturing productivity, over 50 years, has
occurred in the area of machining through developments
in the machining process, in machine tool technology and
in manufacturing management.
The fundamental machine tools that are used for most of
machining processes are Lathe, Drilling, Tapping, Planning,
MILLING and Grinding machines.
The main concepts and working principles of MILLING
MACHINE is discussed further.
MILLING
MILLING MACHINE-The
History
Milling machine is a wheel cutting machine, dating
from 1700s and was used by clockmakers.
“ELI WHITNEY” is most often mentioned as the
first to design and construct a milling machine.
Whitney produced the machine with an eye
towards originating mass production of gun parts.
In 1867,American engineer Joseph R. Brown
introduced Universal Milling Machine.
MILLING –the concept
Milling is a machining process of using rotary cutters
to remove
material from a workpiece by advancing (or feeding)
in a direction
at an angle with the axis of the tool. The figure
shows the principle
Of cutting action of milling cutter.
CONCEPT
The workpiece which is mounted on the table can
be fed either in the direction opposite to that
of the rotatory cutter or in the same direction of
that of cutter.
When the workpiece is fed in opposite direction to
the cutter tooth at the point of contact, the process
is called CONVENTIONAL or UP MILLING.
When the workpiece is fed in the same direction
as that of the cutter tooth at the point of contact
is called CLIMB or DOWN MILLING.

TYPES AND NOMENCLATURE

The milling machine are broadly classified into:

1.Plain or horizontal type of Milling Machine.
2.Vertical Milling Machine.
3.Universal Milling Machine.
4.Planner Type Milling Machine.
5.Profile Cutting Milling Machine.
The two basic types discussed further are –Vertical Milling
Machine and Horizontal Milling Machine.
HORIZONTAL MILLING

PRINCIPLE PARTS
 Base
 Column

 Knee

 Saddle

 Table

 Spindle
 COLUMN: It is combined with the base into a single
casting.
The column holds houses the spindle , transmission system
from
electric motor to the spindle and enables to mount the table
control
&lifting mechanism.
 ARBOR: The arbor is a horizontal shaft provided with a
straight
body and tapered shank. Rotary cutters are mounted on the
arbor.
 KNEE: The knee is casting mounted on
front vertical slide of
the column and is moved up or down by
elevating screw.
 SADDLE: It is a casting with two slides
one on top and other at
the bottom at 90degrees to each other.
 TABLE: Table is mounted on the top of
the saddle.
VERTICAL MILLING
MACHINE
Vertical milling machine has following parts-
1: milling cutter 2: spindle 3: top slide or over
arm
4: column 5: table 6: Y-axis slide 7: knee 8:
base
 In the vertical mill the spindle axis is vertically oriented. Milling
cutters are held in the spindle and rotate on its axis. The spindle can
generally be extended (or the table can be raised/lowered, giving the
same effect), allowing plunge cuts and drilling. There are two
subcategories of vertical mills: the bed mill and the turret mill.

MILLING OPERATIONS
&CUTTERS-
1.PLAIN MILLING: This process is used to mill flat
surfaces of workpiece in such a way that milling
Cutter axis is parallel to surface being milled.
 TYPE OF CUTTER USED: Slab Milling Cutter.
2.END MILLING : this is the process is used to mill
Slots, Pockets and Keyways in such a way that axis
of the milling cutter is perpendicular to surface of workpiece.
 TYPE OF CUTTER USED: End Milling Cutter.
3.SLOT MILLING: This process is milling of slots
using a different type of cutter called “slot drill”.
4.ANGULAR MILLING: It is a milling operation used
to mill flat surfaces that are neither parallel nor
Perpendicular to milling cutter axis.
 TYPE OF CUTTER USED: Angular Milling Cutter
5.STRADDLE MILLING: It is a milling operation that
is used to machine two or more parallel vertical
surfaces at single time.
 TYPE OF CUTTER USED: Straddle Milling Cutter
6.GANG MILLING : this process is similar to
Straddle Milling but machining is done with several
types of milling cutters according to the shape of
desired work surface
Milling machine applications
ADVANTAGES OF MILLING
MACHINE-
 The metal is removed at a faster rate.
 It is possible to perform machining by mounting
more than one cutter at a time.
 It is very useful since various cutters and precise tools can
be machined.
 The quality of the shop is enhanced with the presence of
this machine.
