This document provides information about boiler feed pumps used in power stations. It discusses the objectives and types of pumping systems, including details about boiler feed pumps. The key points are: - Boiler feed pumps are centrifugal pumps that transfer water to boilers. They consist of multiple stages to achieve high pressures. - Axial thrust is balanced through methods like a balancing drum or disc to reduce wear. Cooling, seals, and bearings are also described. - Technical specifications are given for the pump components, including pump type and capacity, motor power and speed, temperatures, pressures, and protections.

INTRODUCTION
 WHAT IS PUMP ?
 The hydraulic machines which convert the mechanical energy into hydraulic
energy are called pumps.

 Reliability, availability & efficiency of a power station depends on the behavior of

the pumps.

 There are various types of pumps used in power stations for different purposes
like to feed the drum of boiler, boost the boiler feed pump etc.

 Various types and sizes of pump are used in power station for handling cold
water, hot water, oil, chemicals etc.

Objectives of pumping system are-

To transfer fluids for processing
To provide motive force in hydraulic system
For services like cooling, lubrication etc.
Pumping Systems

• Series pumping

• Parallel Pumping
• Introduction
BOILER FEED PUMP
• There are three pump sets for each boiler. Two pump sets are supplying feed
water to each boiler, with one pump set being on stand-by.
• Each pump set consists of a booster pump, directly driven from one end of
shaft of an electric driving motor, and a boiler feed pump driven from the
opposite end of the motor shaft through a variable speed turbo-coupling
being enclosed in a split fabricated guard.

The “BOILER FEED PUMP” is a

 six stage
 horizontal
 centrifugal pump of barrel casing design.
BFP Features

• High speed design resulting in to small size of pump.

• Barrel casing construction facilitating uniform warming of inside
stator.
• Flow control achieved by speed regulation with the hydraulic
coupling driven by Constant speed motor.
• The NPSH requirement of BFP is fulfilled by employing the low
speed booster pump directly driven by the motor.
• Axial thrust is balanced by the "hydraulic balancing method" with
balancing drum & disc Arrangement incorporated in the pump.
Balancing leak-off tapping is directly connected to the suction of the
pump.
• Minimum flow of 130 t/hr. is ensured during start-up by providing
recirculation line tapped before discharge valve and connected to
deaerator via ON-OFF type recirculation valve.
• High precision mechanical seals are installed to seal the glands at
suction and discharge side of the pump.

Balancing of Axial Thrust

• Necessity of Thrust Balancing

• By using Balancing drum (piston )

• By using Balancing Disc

• Combination of Balancing Drum & Disc

3.Combination of Balancing Drum & Disc

 Balancing disc and ring do not come in contact and thus

the wear and tear and consequential maintenance is
minimized.

 Helps to set a large axial clearance between the balance

disc and ring so that the arrangement is not affected by
any solids or foreign matter in water.

LUBRICATION SYSTEM OF BFP

 The lube oil pump can be so designed that the lubricating oil requirements of
the driving and driven machines can also be supplied. For the start-up, all the
bearings are pre-lubricated by an attached Auxiliary Oil Pump, which is driven
by separate motor. The A.O.P. supplies oil to the feed pump and motor when
the pump is hot and stand-by.

• Pump cavitation occurs when pressure at pump suction drops below
the atmospheric pressure of the liquid.
• Cavitation is often characterized by:
• Loud noise
• Loss of capacity
• Pitting damage to the part
• RECIRCULATION CONTROL
