My Storage

Tape storage devices store huge amounts of data on thin magnetic tape. The first tape drive from 1951 had a capacity of 224 KB, while modern tape drives can store up to 20 TB. Tape works by converting electrical pulses to magnetic signals on the tape for writing, and detecting magnetic signals to convert back to electrical signals for reading. Tape remains useful for its high capacity, fast retrieval speeds, lower costs per GB than disks, and lower energy usage. However, tape has limitations like linear-only read/write and vulnerability to damage from magnetic fields.

Tape Storage Device

What is it ??
It’s a type of storage device that is used to
store huge amount of data.

This can be done by using thin plastic film

coated with magnetizable material
History and Advancement
• First tape drive was introduced by Remington Rand in 1951
having storage capacity of 224 KB. which had used nickel
plated phosphor Bronze tape.

• The highest capacity available was designed by IBM having

storage capacity of 20 TB. It is supported with LTFS(Linear tape
file system) which allows you to access file directly from large
storage.

• Some manufactures are IBM, Linear Tape Open, Sony, Storage

Tek.
Functioning
1)Writing
It converts Electrical pulse into
magnetic energy and store it
into the magnetic tape.
2) Reading
Magnetic coil detects
magnetized part of tape and
convert it back to electrical
signal.
Why it is still used ??
1) High capacity : 20 TB of data within the 14 sq. ft area.

2) Fast performance : it allows you to retrieve data at the speed of 1 TB/hr.

3) Lower cost per GB : average cost it found at $0.4/Gb. Which is the most
affordable option.

4) Reduced energy cost : studies implies it’s power consumption that are 1/15th
that of disk.

5) Good enough for google , good enough for you ‘-) : in 2011 google made
headlines that it required to restore e-mails of 40,000 users.
Limitations
• In most of the tapes data read and write operation is linear in fashion.
We can’t directly jump to specified address.

• Rapid damage issues due to intense magnetic field.

• reading and writing can be done by specific equipment.

• Data quality erodes over a period of time.

Disk storage device
History
It is an optical storage device to store different formats of data by mean of light rays.
It was developed by Sony and Philips and commercial released in 1982.
It’s player was cost around 1000$ at that time and around 400,000 units were sold in US between
1983 to 1984.
Further several formats were designed to store different types of data.
Formats of CDs
1. CD-R : includes writing the data once.

2. CD-RW : rewritable data.

3. VCD : video compact disc.

4. SVCD : super video compact disc.

5. Photo CD : for storing the image.

6. Blu-ray : storing high amount of data.

Floppy discs
History
A floppy disk commonly known as Floppy is a magnetic storage device. Which was developed in
late 1960s, and launched in 1971 by IBM.

It had capacity of 79.75 Kb. The greatest capacity now available is of 240.75 Kb.
