Group Discussion
1. Carry a Note-pad and a pen
2. Jot down the thoughts/ideas
3. During the discussion note down
the points being discussed
4. Note down the points that strikes
your mind suddenly What is the purpose of Conducting a Group Discussion??? • If the answer is – To test ones communication skills, then it is only partially correct, because, Communication skills of a candidate can be very well assessed in the personal interview session. Thus the reason is to test the candidate’s ability to work in a Team, to assess his Confidence and Leadership and Managerial Skills. Types of candidates you may come across in Group Discussion 1. The Initiator (Tries to lead and take control) 2. The Supporter 3. The Reconciler (Will clarify confusion) 4. The Pathfinder 5. The Interrupter (Negative Quality) 6. The Challenger 7. The Concluder (All’s well that ends well – take the credit by giving a strong conclusion) Points to Remember in a GD Session 1. Maintain eye contact with each and every member of the Group 2. Take the opportunity to initiate the discussion 3. Allow others to speak 4. Talk to the point (Focus on Quality and Not Quantity) 5. Be Sensible by helping any Candidate whosoever is struggling to speak up his/her points 6. Be a Good and Active Listener 7. Be Confident of what you speak (Reflects Positive Attitude) 8. Use modest physical gestures while speaking or emphasizing a point 9. Show enthusiasm (Reflects of your dynamism) 10. Check your body posture (Be alert) 11. Maintain smile in your face 12. Validate or Substantiate your statement with an example 13. Appreciate/Acknowledge the speaker and Add further statements and opinion 14. Do not interrupt hastily 15. Show your disagreement in a modest way but with conviction 16. Do not pause while you speak as it will give chance to others to intrude in and take up the point 17. Participate at regular intervals with valid and strong points 18. At the end after the warning bell for the Wind-up Session, take the opportunity as a Concluder
• To Conclude the session Summarize the
main points of the entire GD (which you might have jotted in the Note-pad)
• Do not add any new point while you are
Summarizing to conclude the session. As an Initiator Start the discussion spontaneously by Greeting the members as “Good Morning/Good Afternoon etc. to one and all” and as suggested the topic of our discussion is “TITLE/TOPIC” • Defining or Explaining the topic • By stating some facts of it with some related examples • Start the sentence with “I believe” or “In my opinion” To Show Disagreement • “I am sorry, however, I would not support your point of view…” • “I think I would rather talk from the other perspective (which means, you are opposing)…” • “I have a different view/opinion on that…” • “I am afraid, that perhaps may not be right…” How to get into the discussion when one of the member is continuously Speaking Increase your voice with a smile and say: • “Exactly correct, what you say is something to be thought about ….” • “So are you saying that (repeat the same sentence what the other member was speaking)…” • “That’s wonderful, you are right because …” Have a good day
