Sarvajanik College of Engi Neering & Technology: KRIBHCO (Krishak Bharati Cooperative Limited)

The document summarizes the internship of a chemical engineering student at KRIBHCO, a fertilizer company in Gujarat, India. KRIBHCO produces ammonia and urea with an annual capacity of 10.03 lakh MT of ammonia and 17.29 lakh MT of urea. The document describes the ammonia production process and key steps in the urea production process, which involves urea synthesis, purification, concentration and prilling to produce the final product.

Company profile

• Urea with annual installed capacity of 10.03 Lakh MT ammonia and

17.29 lakh MT of urea.
• Krishak Bharati Cooperative Limited (KRIBHCO) has setup a
fertilizer complex at Hazira in the state of Gujarat, on the bank of river
Tapti, 15 Kms from Surat city on Surat-Hazira highway.
• Main product of KRIBHCO are ammonia, urea, bio-fertilizer.
• Urea with annual installed capacity of 10.03 Lakh MT ammonia and
17.29 lakh MT of urea.
Ammonia plant
Ammonia plant

• First natural gas feed to the desulphurizer to remove sulphur content

by CoMoX bed. Because sulphur can reduce the efficiency of
process.
• After that, flow will go to the primary reformer to heat methane and
maintain balance of nitrogen and oxygen for haber process.
• In secondary reformer, the air is supplied to add nitrogen otherwise
reduce hydrogen for balance 1:3 ratio of nitrogen:hydrogen.

• Then flow enter into the low and high shift converter and then CO2
removal section by MDEA component.
• After removal CO2, flow go to the methanator for convert CO to
CO2 and this CO2 line reached to the urea section.
• In ammonia reactor, there are no of tubes to recycle the flow for
higher conversion.
• At the end of the process 98% conversion can get by industry.

 Properties of Urea:
• Urea is a white crystaline, odorless and hygroscopic substance
generally produced in the form of prills. It is a diamide of carbonic
acid which sublimes at around 120-130°C and decomposes to NHs
and CO, at around 160-190°C.
• Molecular Weight: 60.05 Kg/Kmole
• Avg. Nitrogen : 46.4 %
• Melting Point: 132.7°c
• Boiling Point: Decomposes before boiling at atmospheric pressure
• Specific Gravity: 1.330 at 25°C, 1.225 at 132.7°C.
• Viscosity (at 132.70°C): 2.58 cp

 Application of Urea:
1. Fertilizer Grade:
• The principal field of application of Urea is for agriculture purpose
as a of prills Nitrogenous fertilizer grade Urea is generally marketed
in the forms due to its free flowing characteristics. A certain quality
of urea is also used for making fertilizer like NP or NPK of different
grades.
2. Feed Grade:
• Apart from its use as a nitrogenous fertilizer urea is also used for the
purpose of animal feed as a protein supplement in some of the
advance countries.

Application of Urea:
3. Technical Grade: Another important application of urea is for the
manufacture of thermosetting resins, the most important among
which are urea formaldehyde, urea melamine etc. Further is also
used for manufacture of several other chemicals and
pharmaceuticals etc.

 Brief Process Description:

• Urea today occupies the key position amongst the various solid
nitrogenous fertilizers by virtue of its highest nitrogen content (Pure
urea contains 46.64 % Nitrogen ) which allows a considerable
saving in transportation and distribution cost.
• The urea production takes place through the following main
operations:
1. Urea synthesis and high pressure recovery
2. Urea purification and low pressure recovery
3. Urea concentration
4. Urea prilling
5. Waste water treatment
