Substitution Method The substitution method for solving a system of equations can be used to find the solution to a system. The goal is to obtain one equation containing only one variable.
Example: Solve by substitution. y = 2x – 13 – 4x – 7 = 9y
Substitution Method 1. Pick either equation and put a * beside it. 2. In the * equation, solve literally for 1 variable (either one). 3. Plug your variable’s other name into the non-*ed equation. 4. Solve for the remaining variable. 5. Plug this value into either original equation to solve for the last variable 6. Check your answer in both.
Honors Algebra class to New York to take a trip to the Museum of Math. Including Mr. Coltharp (sponsor) other sponsors, and students, there were 28 people on the trip. He purchased the sponsor’s tickets for $25 and the student’s tickets for $20. Mr. Coltharp total budget for the trip was $600. How many sponsor and student tickets did Mr. Coltharp buy?
Conclusion What is our new method of solving system of equations? How is it different than solving using elimination? What does it tell us when we get a solution, or not get a solution, graphically?
