Heat Transfer Enhancement Techniques: Presented by Dr.D.MALA

This document discusses techniques for enhancing heat transfer, including passive techniques using inserts to disrupt boundary layers and create secondary flows, as well as using nanofluids. It outlines objectives to discuss augmentation devices and nanofluid behavior. Methodologies increase heat transfer by introducing secondary flows, separating and delaying boundary layer development, and enhancing thermal conductivity. The conclusion indicates inserts create secondary flows while nanofluids increase thermal conductivity and chaotic nanoparticle movement, augmenting heat transfer.

METHODOLOGY

MECHANISMS FOR AUGMENTATION OF HEAT

TRANSFER

 Introducing secondary flows.

 Promoting boundary-layer separation and Delaying the boundary layer
development.
 Disruption of the laminar sub layer in the turbulent boundary layer.
 Promoting flow Retention time.
 Enhancing effective thermal conductivity of the fluid.
 Thermal dispersion.

THERMAL PERFORMANCE FACTOR

 The enhanced heat transfer is defined as the ratio of the Nusselt number in
the tube with insert to that of the tube without insert (Nui /Nu). Likewise,
enhanced friction factor ratio is defined as the ratio of friction factor in the
tube with insert to that of the tube without insert (fi/f).
 The ratio of both these criteria under the constraint of a constant pumping
power gives the thermal performance factor (ἠ) as

ἠ =

14
NANOFLUIDS

 Dispersing nanoparticles (smaller than 100nm) in conventional

heat transfer fluids.
 Nanoparticle
- Oxide ceramics (Al2O3,CuO)
- Metal carbides (SiC)
 Suspended nanoparticles in various base fluids can alter the fluid
flow and heat transfer characteristics of the base fluids. These
suspensions of nano sized particles in the base fluids are called
nanofluids.
 These fluids exhibit larger thermal properties than conventional
coolants. Much larger relative surface area of nanoparticles,
compared to those of conventional particles, not only significantly
improves heat transfer capabilities, but also increases the stability of
the suspension.

15
PREPARATION METHODS FOR NANOFLUIDS

SINGLE –STEP METHOD

Production and dispersion of nanoparticles into base fluid in a

single step.

TWO-STEP METHOD
 Dry nanoparticles, either synthesized or purchased are dispersed
into base fluid using ultrasonic agitation or mechanical stirring
or by adding dispersants or adjusting pH value of nanofluids.

16
The volume concentration of nanoparticles is evaluated as below:

CONCLUSION

By introducing inserts in a heat exchanger

 Secondary flows were created
 Disruption of the laminar sub layer and boundary-layer
 Delay in the boundary layer development was there.
By adding Nanoparticle to the fluid
 Thermal conductivity increases,
 Chaotic movement, dispersion and fluctuation of nanoparticles especially
near the tube wall leads to increase in the energy exchange rates and
augments heat transfer rate between the fluid and the tube wall
