RELIGION?
RELIGION IS…
Is defined as “people’s beliefs and opinions
concerning the existence, nature and
worship of a god or holy beings and divine
involvement in the universe and human life”
It denotes the belief in, or worship of, a god,
gods or the supernatural .
Is a set of beliefs and practices that is often
focused on one or more deities, or gods.
RELIGION…
Religion may be defined as a
cultural system of designated
behaviors and practices,
worldviews, texts, sanctified places,
prophecies, ethics, or organizations
that relates humanity to
supernatural.
FUNCTIONS OF RELIGION…
1. Religions helps man to bear sufferings.
2. It teaches that eveything happens according to the
will of god.
3. It boosts self-worthy and dignity—explains that a
person, regardless of his social and economical status,
is important in the eyes of god.
4. It helps create disciplined and beneficial citizen—
because it encourages its members to live in line of
teachings of religious traditions.
5. It promotes social welfare and development.

It makes people feel they are a
part of something and can be a
great tool for many in life.
Beliefs have no limits.
They can be individual beliefs
or be a common beliefs.
BELIEF SYSTEM
A belief system is a set of mutually
supportive beliefs. The beliefs of
any such system can be classified as
religious, philosophical, political,
ideological, or a combination of
these.
BELIEF SYSTEM
It is the power of belief that causes
things to happen in our lives. Most
people define beliefs as inward
convictions, a feeling of certainty about
what something means. They are what
you hold dear and are rooted deeply
within. A belief is both mental and
emotional.

proposed various theories on how
religion began.
One theory is that religion started with
the belief in spirit (animism), then
progressed into the notion that there
were numerous gods (polytheism), and
ultimately developed as the idea of a
single god (monotheism).

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam,
which share a common tradition of
monotheism, the belief in one god.
POLYTHEISM
Polytheism is the worship of or
belief in multiple deities, which are
usually assembled into a pantheon
of gods and goddesses,, along with
their own religions and rituals…
within theism, it contrasts with
monotheism, the belief in a
singular god.

Monotheism has been defined as
the belief in the existence of only
one god that created the world, is
all-powerful and intervenes in the
world. A broader definition of
monotheism is the belief in one
god.

Why do we have "separation of church
and state?"
A wall of separation between church and
state. This is a very strong statement, very
clear in meaning. First of all, it means that
the government cannot make laws that favor
one religion to any other, because it cannot
make laws related to the establishment of a
religion or the free expression of religious
beliefs.
SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE
Is the distance in relationship between any
religion and the nation state.
Historically, in the Philippines, there was a
very close ties between the Spanish
government and the catholic church during
the colonial period.
The principle of separation of church and
state were introduced during the american
occupation and it has been preserved until
today.
SEPARATION OF CHURCH & STATE
The Philippine Constitution declares, in article II
section 6: “the separation of church and state shall
be inviolable”. (unbreakable)
Article III section 5 : “no law shall be made
respecting (in regards) an establishment of
religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.
The free exercise and enjoyment of religious
profession and worship, without discrimination or
preference shall forever be allowed. No religious
test shall be required for the exercise of civil or
political rights.”
What does the principle of separation of
church and state mean?
The principle that government must
maintain an attitude of neutrality
toward religion… The first amendment
not only allows citizens the freedom to
practice any religion of their choice, but
also prevents the government from
officially recognizing or favoring any
religion.
INSTITUTIONALIZED RELIGION
Refer to organized system of beliefs
and practices relating to the divine.
This term is used as opposed to
tribal,primitive, and indigeneous
religions.
In modern societies, an
institutionalized religion, though
broadly influential, is treated as a
separate institution.
