Timer IC Unit Operation: By: Diana Mae G. Cubillas Ics 30 A

The 555 timer IC can operate in two modes: one-shot mode and astable mode. In one-shot mode, it generates a single output pulse of a fixed duration when triggered, while in astable mode it continuously generates a train of pulses that switch between voltage levels, functioning as a clock. The 555 timer contains linear comparators and digital flip-flops that allow it to precisely time intervals using an external resistor-capacitor combination according to different formulas for each mode of operation.

Timer IC

The figures above is the 555 timer, an analog-digital IC. As described in

the figures, it is made of linear comparators and digital flip-flops.
The one on the left is the internal of the IC and the one on the right is
its external view.
Operational Modes
 One-Shot Mode  Astable Multivibrator
(Monostable Multivibator) (Clock Circuit)
• Has a single stable state, • Simply an oscillator
which is off state • Generates a continuous
• Generates a single pulse of stream of rectangular off-on
a fixed time duration each pulses that switch between
time it receives an input two voltage levels
trigger pulse
Monostable Multivibrator
Uses of One-Shot Mode
 turning some circuit or external component on or
off for a specific length of time
 generate delays
